I don't cross-chain, so there's two gears unused on my 2x9 setup.

My low gear is seldom used; less than once per ride. Second largest cog is used at least a couple times per ride.

I'll use high gear a couple times per ride; on the downhills.

Biggest gear I can sprint in (for my lame sprint) is my second largest gear. Even this is being generous.

I'd say I use 80% of my gears 90% of the time; the remaining 20% get used 10% of the time.

I paid for 20...and I use every last one of them.

Ok, so I rarely cross chain...but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened.

Right now I am cross chaining too much because my strength and fitness has me either going big to big or little to little when I need power. Right now I am using all of them.
