PYEONGCHANG, South Korea, Feb 18 (Reuters) - A Russian medallist at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics is suspected of having tested positive for a banned substance, a source at the Games said on Sunday, in a potential major blow to Russia’s efforts to emerge from a drug-cheating scandal.

Alexander Krushelnitsky, a bronze-medallist along with his wife in mixed-doubles curling, is suspected of having tested positive for meldonium, the source said. Meldonium increases blood flow which improves exercise capacity in athletes.

Seriously? Curling? I did not realize that "sport" required any strength or endurance. Not saying no skill is involved but....doping...in curling?

Its not likely to have been taken for increased physical abilities in curling. Likely has mental focus nerve relaxant properties as well? Or maybe the person caught just takes it and dident realize its on the doping list. Wasent that long ago sharapovas case? Not knowing but guessing it was not banned previous to that?

Meldonium (INN), trade-named as Mildronate among others, is a limited-market pharmaceutical, developed in 1970 by Ivars Kalviņš at the USSR Latvia Institute of Organic Synthesis, and now manufactured by the Latvian pharmaceutical company Grindeks and several generic manufacturers. It is primarily distributed in Eastern European countries as an anti-ischemia medication

At least a home town medication...:)

Same drug that Maria Sharapova was busted for.

This was in mixed doubles, where he threw the stone and then jumped up and swept along its track. It takes a lot of strength and endurance. In the regular game the sweepers tend to look like football players.

It's the Olympics, doping is the expectation. Eddie B is probably his coach

That aside, enjoy the show. Far superior to Real Housewives

If you say so. I saw some guy on the TV the other day who had his gut hanging over his pants and he was an Olympic curler. Not saying they can't be in shape but really, not a high strength or endurance activity IMO.

Don't know who these are but they don't look very buff to me. More like normal bowlers. The Russian who got busted does look quite muscular though!

Meldonium does wonders for the putting stroke and trigger pull.

I guess the question is whether curling, golf, or shooting are real sports.

those americans (pictured in mcteague's post) were funny to watch because they were just fighting with each other the whole time, and it was all caught on camera/microphone. they're brother and sister, so it's natural.

no idea what this drug even does for performance enhancement but I can guess that keeping up with the stone while sweeping is not the easiest thing in the world. but yes, it's a game more about skill and strategy than endurance.

Only a sport if you can get injured or killed doing it..unless the shooters shoot at each other..all else are 'games'..

I agree but usually get flamed on that front. Some people consider hiking or even non-competitive, bagel and beer run randonneuring to be sport.
