View Full Version : Misuse of "quote" function?

More than once lately I've been confused when reading a post that "quotes" a previous response. The confusion is caused by the disparity between the original quote and the "quoted" quote that shows up in the responding post.

Apparently, the "quote" function in the forum software allows a responder to change the original poster's quote (even though the quote is displayed in the "quote box").

Does this unnerve anyone else besides me? Am I too edgy since the suspension of habeas corpus (http://www.alternet.org/rights/42345/)?

In any case, I've not seen any cases here where mis-quoting has been used punitively--until now it's been pretty clever. However, it's just a matter of time until this feature allows an ill wind to blow across this forum.

Really?

:p

Reader beware. This is the internet. A careful reader double checks the original post before responding to a snip in another post.

I can understand the reason for allowing edits, since I have frequently wanted to respond to one specific part of someone's post. If the original post was long and I had to quote the whole thing, it might not always be obvious what I'm responding to. Therefore, I frequently delete all but the relevant portion of the post I'm quoting.

That being said, it is interesting that the later poster could make more devious changes to the original post. Guess I haven't thought too much about this, but I could see how changes could make the original post look quite different than it was. Still, if you're the original poster and wanted to "defend" what you really wrote, you could always point someone to your original post.

Yes. Considering the length of some posts, pulling out a quote is the easiest way to respond to a section of the post without going on and on yourself. However, I have observed some poor editing habits that put together different ideas from a post that were intended to be kept separate by the original post...and some quotes that are pulled so far out of context no wonder someone has comment on what was said.

I see two possible scenarios:

1. The second poster edits the quote.
2. The orginal poster, after the second poster quotes the original, goes back to edit the original post.

In the second case, the original post will have a small notation added to the bottom, saying "edited by ____". So readers will know it's the second case. If not, it's the first.

Hmm. There's a third scenario. In this one, the second poster, with a tiny bit of knowledge of html code, completely fabricates a quote from another forumite.

...or even fabricates the forumite.

guilty. what began as a virtual theatrical device between two-four
self appointed ladies men has been co-opted by the mainstream,
and is now nothing more than a 3rd generation joke atmo. the
internet is a breeding ground for lawlessness and rampent gramer
and spulling errs, and it also courts the misfits who are even not
worth leaving at the greyhound track iirc.

the issue of community standards is not unlike driving school. the
first thing - the very first thing - you learn is, "stay between the lines.
the lines are your friend".

from the wierd lyric links, to the binary, to the posting in white-out,
and straight through to the sybilization situation, this space has been
officially rocked and all is awry atmo.

the universe is expanding to provo.

The art of taking quotes out of context is perfected by studio junior executives, who pore over movie reviews. That's how "It's a must-see movie for anyone who has a death wish" becomes "A MUST-SEE MOVIE!"
