I was thinking about listing a fly rod outfit for sale on eBay but haven’t tried to sell anything in eBay in a long time. How much should I expect to incur in fees? Is this a set percentage? Any other hidden stuff I should know about?

Different categories have different fees... But fishing is probably the same as cycling - 10% of selling price. Then PayPal or whatever other system they are using now for another 2 or 3 percent.

Thanks... just making sure I don’t take a bath and give it away. Do they charge you if the auction runs it’s course and the item doesn’t sell?

Nope.

But there are rules and potential fees around ending an auction early; and additional fees for things like a reserve price or special duration.

A long time ago there were small listing fees. But unless you use special extras in the listing, there are no fees, unless it sells.

Ebay will also collect a 10% fee on your shipping charge. Their shipping calculator always underestimates and doesn't account for signature confirmation or insurance , so I usually overestimate weight/size a bit so I don't take a bath on shipping... or use flat rate and add those things to the cost, though I doubt a fishing rod could go flat rate.

+ if you live in EU ebay will now take 12.5 % or similar depending on which country.

They added the vat on top of their fees. Swedish vat 25% of 10% = 2.5%
Total 12.5%

I wonder whats next, can they push 20% in 2020 ?

Its ridiculous imo yet i use it now and then

I agree... sometimes it is just the best option. I calculated my auction to accommodate the fees. If it doesn't sell, I am fine with that. I just didn't to list, have it not sell, and then get hit with some unexpected fee.

The fees are outrageous but sometimes it’s the best place to sell.

I just sold a point and shoot camera for $670 to some guy in Hong Kong take out the fee and it’s still more than I’d get anywhere else

Yeh that's a fair point.

Maybe cos your dollar is stronger than ours it works out better.

It's just annoying when I sell a frame for $700, they take $75, paypal takes another 3-4%, then I've still gotta ship it worldwide.
