View Full Version : What stem currently in production looks least bad on a frame with skinny tubes?

As the title suggests, I'm curious what stem that's readily available looks okay with a steel bike that has a relatively traditional (read: 1" or 1 1/8") front end and relatively traditional (read: pretty skinny) tubes? I like the Fizik Cyrano R1, but I wish it came in +/-6 rather than a +/-7. (Yes, I really am a princess, and this stem really is a pea.)

Help me understand. You already have the bike? It has a 1" steerer so you can use a shim if necessary?

Correct.

this is 100% the right answer, low stack height, one of the skinniest cross-sections, two thin bands to secure.

Piling on. Great stem, slim profile, looks good with skinny tubes.

Nitto Technomic Dlx and Nitto NP are what really goes with traditional bikes.

I've found the Forte Pro to be pretty minimal, as well as light and reasonably inexpensive:

Maybe not the cheapest route, but Eric Estlund at Winter will build whatever you need.

My quill stem for my DS he matched to the headtube angle exactly to ensure a level stem/top tube look.

His threadless stuff looks pretty killer too.

I'll raise you one. A little spendy though. Skinny tubes need silver

If the frame is steel 1inch fork type of stuff i would just put a quill stem, nothing beat a quill stem in those frames.

Unless you want to build a light bike and have chosen a threadless fork for that reason. I think they can look pretty nice.

Speaking of which, here's another candidate from Nitto:

Deda or Ritchey

Another vote for the Deda Superleggero. I can confirm that it is smaller than the Ritcheys and 3Ts. A friend picked one up a few months ago for his steel bike. It looked so good, that I went and got one myself. I've got a 1" steerer and am using an 1 1/8" shim. One thing I noticed is that the steerer portion of the stem is short (which I like), but it means the shim stuck up a bit above the steerer portion of the stem. It should be easy to file the shim down a little, but for now I just used an 1 1/8" spacer on top in order to set the preload.

After getting one of these stems it is now my go to (used to be ritchey)

Well, Eric Winter is currently producing things like this in any length, rise, size and type you're after. Might take a bit longer to receive than the Deda option tho...:)

Just got a 130 for my Hampsten - it's a work of art (though the Trentacinque matches the Superzero post a little better)...

I have a custom 1" 120mm 31.8 stem that was built by Brent Steelman. Looks perfect though weighs in at 257g

I just changed it out for a 120 superleggera at 124g with shim.
Looks fine !!

Sounds like Deda is the overwhelming winner, and OP got his answer, but I always go with the Syntace F99/F109/F119/F139 series. Comes in polished and black. Logos are discreet and come off easily. And it's lightweight.

Velo Orange makes some nice stems, not too pricey, they have 6 and 17 degree options, and 70-120mm lengths, and they are polished rather than black.

Ahhh, you’re right. You want a Rhonda or Wendy for 26.0 or 31.8

If you want the stem in black the Deda Superleggero is one you should consider. It is super skinny aka proportional with thin tubes. Plus it is easily debadged.

Syntace makes a 1" stem that marries perfectly with their 26.0 bar. I rock this on my IF Crown J so if you're at 1" it's a no-brainer. Looks great and the drops feel legit. There's no stiffness penalty; the bulge up to 31.8 looks odd on skinny tubes atmo.
