Sweet looking Waltworks just popped up on eBay at TPC. Would it be classified as an XC or Trail frame?

I'm comparing it to my Procaliber 9.8SL geometry chart here (https://www.bikegallery.com/product/trek-procaliber-9.8-sl-278083-1.htm), of which I have A 21.5", but am a bit confused.

Overall size looks good and modern with the boost and all that, just not in the know on the angles and such, 120mm fork, etc.

Waltworks Geo:

Effective Top Tube: 670 mm

Seat Tube: 480 mm (C-T)

Head Tube: 170 mm

Rear Spacing: 12x148 mm Boost

Head Tube Angle: 68.5 degrees

Seat Tube Angle: 73.0 degrees

Chain Stay Length: 415-430mm (adjustable)

Bottom Bracket Drop: 70mm

Wheelbase (based on 120mm/51mm offset fork): 1165mm

Slightly wider bar shorter stem and you'll be good. Puts you more neutral over the rear wheel, you'll want that with the longer travel fork...go at least 120mm and boost. Let gravity/skillz do the rest, a welcome respite from the XC race setup of the other bike. Definitely more of a trail bike, tip of the iceberg with longer travel, allows you to begin setting the fork up proper. Have fun

Very similar to the bike I got from Walt, allthough mine is slightly shorter to fit my 5'9.5". If I had the extra money I would actually buy this and just put a very short stem on it. I run rigid fork from Walt or 120mm F34.
Mine is used for rough trails, xc racing and everything in between. Great as a fully rigid singlespeed as well!

This is a stupid good deal and that colour is currently en vogue as well.

Keep in mind that this is designed for a 29+ so you'll need some meaty tires to get the BB, etc. where it's supposed to be.

PS - a 29/27.5+ Rockshox Reba fits a 29+ tire on 50mm rims comfortably. It's a good, reliable, relatively inexpensive option for a bike like this. Other options would be a Fox 34 or a Lauf Boost (max 2.8" but I'm sure you could push that a bit further).

It’s a rowdy trail bike that could still do XC easily. It might not get you a podium finish, but you’ll have the most fun. Seems like a great deal!

One weird thing — why a 68mm B.B.?

Also note max chainring is 30T.

What he said, plus it's a plus size (not tire size)! Don't know how big you are...

Maybe this is an error? TPC usually deals in road stuff so if they see small, threaded BB they may have defaulted to 68mm. My guess is that it's a 73mm BB (designed for Boost crankset) as I doubt Walt would spec a road crankset on a Boost rear end.

As for the 30T - that's plenty for a 29+ bike. Wheel diameter is BIG. I have an oval 32 with 11-40t cassette and and considering going down to a 28t with 11-46t for an upcoming trip to the Alps.

Only thing I'd note is OP, you usually seem to like a decent amount of drop for your bikes, and 170mm is a massive headtube for a MTB with that long a fork. Not a good or bad thing, but if you want your MTB position to be at all like your road position (not that it should or has to be), this frame won't get you there.

Extremely sweet frame though.

I noticed that HT looked really tall compared to my Procaliber, plus the Procaliber only has a 100mm fork on it.

I love the purple, and lusted after Waltworks bikes when I lived in Boulder a decade ago...hence my interest.

It does seem like it'd make a sweet bikepacking rig actually or drop-bar 29+ - and maybe that's why it has the tall HT? Something like a more trail oriented Fargo? Hard to say...

Thought it might be non-suspension corrected, but not the case as looks like I found the original build thread.

You’re showing some restraint in the new year Clean.

2017 Clean would’ve bought that and asked questions later with one wheel out the backdoor.

I bet a phone call to TPC would clear everything up. Write all your qs down and ask away. They’re usually pretty responsive.

Walt is pretty responsive as well. You might consider calling or emailing him with questions, too.

^^ true..

Trying to live and learn a bit. It’s hard, so many bikes, so little time.

That was enlightening - thanks for the sleuth work tracking it down.

I think I’m going to stick with my Procaliber for now. My dreams are more of endurance racing and this one feels more of a playing on trails sort of rig..

NP. Bike looked familiar as I had seen it before. Walt and his customers tend to share their info and Walt in particular is such a great resource when he posts at MTBR or elsewhere. Very giving with his knowledge to the benefit or customers and other builders.

Yep. This one is a beast. Trail riding and endurance for loaded bike packing sure. Endurance racing, not so much.

Have fun on the Pro for now!
