It seems like the places I go, people on the street play just as well as what you hear on the radio. Is it just me, or are these people good:

Most of the garbage on the radio doesn't qualify as music.

That was good Weisan, pal. You do not need to be great to be signed up to a pro contract to be great. Thanks.

That would be the buzz and real benefit of live performance (which, no matter how hard you try or no matter what wizardry is involved) cannot be emulated. I feel sad for those people who have never seen and heard a live performance which quite literally changed their worldview.

J. B. Hutto is said to have played on the streets of Chicago, and he was definitely worth seeing wherever you could catch him.

I got to see him once, opening for George Thorogood at Mabel's in Champaign IL. It was the night John Lennon was shot, December 8, 1980. Great show by both though George's second set was diminished by the news of the shooting - but not by the performance. I don't know the backstory, but guessing Hutto was a guy that George admired, and George got him the opening slot. Kudos to George for always acknowledging his influences, and giving those that were there a very memorable night.

I actually agreed with what you had earlier. I'll always play music but it was never something that I could support myself from. A lifetime passion, just like bicycles.

Seems true in NYC--I have heard amazing classical musician, pop musicians--there is such a depth of talent between all the the schools teaching performing arts, and the incredible numbers of musicians who come to play and record, that just the spill over blows you away.

The one musician who comes to mind that was a street musician and then recorded was Steve Forbert--'Live on Arrival' was an early album BITD.

My favorite street musician in NYC was Theo Eastwind. Saw him a couple times in concert at various venues in Manhattan & Brooklyn.

Funny thing is he's now a real estate agent (I am on an email list somehow, likely from when he was announcing show appearances)! Here's a couple of links:

One of my favorites (great harmonies and drumming):

A couple of good ones:

Bad news about John Lennon. I believe I saw J.B. Hutto and the new Hawks when I was in Bar Harbor Maine one time when we were just walking around and walked in (pretty sure it was them). The show was fun.

Good stuff oldpotatoe. I think it is really great when you are just walking around and find stuff like that.
