View Full Version : How to finish wrap with satellite shifters

I've tried various methods to finish the wrap with the satellite buttons, but nothing has looked very professional.
I've tried punching holes in the wrap (Fizik) which was pretty ugly, using electrical tape, and using my normal silicone self adhering tape.

Any ideas?

Below is what I've tried, and no, I haven't aligned the fork yet! ;)

I can offer little help as I've never done this myself but i know you have to do something cause thats is likely illegal in most places .)

I'm still in the mechanical world but do a Google search and there are quite few examples on the web.

I've searched to no avail. The overwrap is really tricky unless you get a very soft, flexible bar tape because you run the risk of collapsing the button (I tried). It does look
the best, just can't figure out how to do it right.

WTH? ... is this shimano? You are supposed to cut a hole in the bar wrap.. besides those look like the sprint shifters.. so not the idea location . Look for the old 2 button switch box

This looks pretty clean. I just google imaged satellite shifter bar tape images and many others showed up.

A nice bar wrap is definitely easier to achieve with the previous generation climbing switch and sprint shifters. I don't know what Shimano was thinking with the 9100 satellite shifters - they are an abomination - and I say that as a great fan of Shimano's gear.

Yes, the Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 SW-R9150 Remote Satellite Shifters (https://www.coloradocyclist.com/shimano-dura-ace-di2-r9150-climbing-shifter), to be precise. They are designed to sit on top, but that doesn't mean they can't go elsewhere.

LOL, no problem!

I believe those are the SRAM Etap shifters, and yes they are very clean!

Those look like Sram's blips, which are designed to sit under the bar wrap if I am not mistaken. Shimano's definitely need the buttons to be exposed and free of restriction.

I know you have the 9150 satellite shifters, but consider the previous gen climbing shifter. I position it as shown in the image so I can tap it with my left index finger. And this way the buttons are in a more natural orientation - the left button sends the chain to the left on the cassette (bigger cog) and vice versa.

I have that shifter on my road bike and although I like your mounting position better, it's been a little problematic for me, especially with winter gloves.

This is just shocking... 2900 pounds versus 2170 pounds, thats a lot of dough difference between them, pretty much you can get a frame or a set of wheels with the difference in money.

NEver used sram for anything but this etap thing really gets me, price wise, simplicity of it aswell. And for the little ride i do probably the batteries will last me the whole year.

Maybe they're not supposed to be wrapped at all! Just doesn't seem right though!:bike:

The ETap blip shifters are great! Puts the DI2 remote shifters to shame. I just mount mine under bar wrap on the underside, around the middle of my aero flat bars. They work great and you don’t even know they are there. Completely hidden, wires and all.

I just got one of them, they are very small, very cool. I am going to install it in an interesting way :)

need to experiment with it but I am a campy guy, I am going to miss the thumb shifter. So, I got a blip with the longest wire and going to run it from the left shifter onto the side of the right shifter (will probably just mount as sprint shifter position but maybe will get creative and mount on shifter). I also wanted to run the wire inside the bars but carbon bars and I am not going to be drillin that is for sure).

It not only will be awesome that I can shift up with thumb and down with paddle but I will also be able to shift front derailleur with one hand.

In my opinion, the Shimano remote shifters are an abomination. Zip ties ... really? I've got the climing shifter module but have not tried the sprint version. Regardless, they are a joke. A ridiculously large module which isn't stable w/the zip tie mounting. Shimano can do better ... I think.

They could learn a lot from SRAM. I always thought the DI2 remote shifters were pretty stupid. Never felt very solid the way they got mounted, nor intuitive, and awkward to use.

Interesting concept! Hopefully the thumb action and paddle shift at the same time won’t feel awkward. Let us know how it turned out.

To the OP...wait, I am the OP, I'm now thinking about the old design philosophy "If you can't hide it, feature it"! Screw the overwrap, just leave it exposed in all of it's flawed glory!

Depending on your bar shape you probably don't need the holder for the shifter - it adds a lot of height and makes things uglier.

Mine are just electrical taped to the bar and then wrapped. A small cut in the tape allows the button to be used.
