View Full Version : Wayyyyyyy OT: hotdogs

My kid likes hotdogs. They are easy to prepare, easy to hold, and easy to eat. But ya, they are generally garbage and chocked full of sodium. I have used the google, and there are healthier options out there. So my questions:

1. Is there a healthy 'dog out there that you feed to your kids?
2. Better yet, have you ever tried making your own? I suppose I could modify a mild sausage recipe and grind the pork very very fine, but have never tried.

Thoughts? Thanks!

Organic turkey dogs. They're weird, in their own right - especially when you cook them over a campfire (they blister and turn pale grey) - but they're... better?

You can try Hebrew National hot dogs. They are kosher, so only 100% beef. They are probably not as healthy as a butcher shops hot dogs, but I imagine much cheaper and last longer.

Thought this was going to be about the proper toppings and preparation of hot dogs ;)

I go to my local butcher shop (Baron's Meats here in Alameda). Nothing from the supermarket comes close. Though we are blessed with more than our share of local hotdoggeries (Doggy Style, Pampered Pup, Casper's, et al. in Oakland) that are pretty good.

Expensive, good and most likely healthier than your average mass manufactured HD:

Take a look at Oscar Mayer Angus Beef hot dogs. They taste good and probably have less "ingredients" that you want to avoid.

^ This. Any kosher hotdog is going to have less crap in it than anything else on the market just keep in mind that all hotdogs have preservatives.

Turkey hotdogs and/or the like are not going to be much better when you consider all of the salt and preservatives they put in these things.

I guess I'm the only one missing the irony here - your screen name is "Veggiburger" after all.:p
I'm a meat in tube form lover myself. My wife makes it more legitimate by making her own pickles, kimchi, cole slaw. Just serve it with something healthy.
My wife makes the best organic black beans. Put them on a nice Kosher hotdog with some cheese and onion and I'm in heaven.

Ha, I'm no vegetarian. I hunt, love all forms of protein (even peculiar ones, I could have my own travel food show) and have made some darn good venison/pork sausage. I think I was eating a veggieburger when I came up with my handle.

Yeah, we try to jazz the little ones' food up with veggies, but sometimes when you're home after a long day and someone is tugging at your pant leg for a hot dog....well...you give em a hot dog. :)

They sell uncured hot dogs at some fancy supermarkets if you are trying to avoid nitrate/nitrite. I feed my kids hebrew national. Don't worry about sodium, kids just pee out the salt that they don't need. Mix things up with chicken apple sausage and stuff like that.

Hebrew National or Wrangler only here. Can't stand other 'dogs.

Of course, you can always cook up some nice brats as well. All this talk of hot dogs with cole slaw, kimchi, and beans got me hungry.

I don’t eat beef or pork anymore. But when I was growing up, we’d have Hebrew National brand hot dogs that are decent quality. I get turkey or chicken hot dogs now, but I’m not a hot dog fan. I brown them and cut them up to use as dog training treats.

Like others have said, good and likely less nasty stuff.

Really good small butcher is this place in Honesdale PA. Alpine (https://thealpineonline.com/) is a real German butcher and restaurant and they ship anywhere. Great dogs ...

There is no reason to put ketchup on a hot dog. Boar's head spicey mustard is preferred in our house.

When I first moved to NH in '86 from NY, I was at the grocer in Keene NH. We asked at the deli counter for Kosher hot dogs (mostly for quality) and they had no idea what we were asking for and directed us to display case and said "we have hot dogs with cheese in them". For a long time we hauled Nathan's and Sabretts back when visiting family.

Ok, hot dogs are garbage. Thats what they are suposed to be and thats what makes them so damn good. Not everything has to be healthy. You can have veggie tubesteak but then it is not a hot dog.
The hot dog is topped with yellow mustard, chopped white onions, bright green sweet pickle relish, a dill pickle spear, tomato slices or wedges, pickled sport peppers and a dash of celery salt.

Dog lover here, never pass a hot dog stand.

A few years ago, wife and I were spending a weekend in Provincetown MA. I saw a hot dog restaurant called Lucky Dog (no longer there) and had to try it out. Got the dog, sat on a bench outside, took a bite - and it was the best dog ever. It snapped, had great taste, had a good bun, with just mustard, relish and onion. No ketchup.

I remember telling my wife how great the dog was. Then, the manager comes outside, asks how things are, and I just unloaded on him how great the dog was. I asked what kind they were, and he said they are his own, a combination of different stuff. I wanted to buy a bunch of dogs to bring home, but they didn't sell them.

We have two women here in town that opened up a hot dog stand called Snappy Dogs, and they have done very well. They have great dogs with homemade toppings. Most importantly, they are excellent at the whole customer service thing. They greet everyone and are just incredibly nice - hence, their success.

Ketchup, mustard, relish....and if we are at one of those street meat stalls, on goes the green olives, corn relish, etc etc.

In order for it to be a good hotdog, some of it needs to land on your shirt.

In the city where today's Frankfurter originated, they put ketchup on them.

Let's put it this way: it makes no sense to forbid ketchup, but allow sweet relish.

I was very, very skeptical of Chicago style dogs, but they have won me over. It's a different experience, but it works.

I grew up in Chicagoland and these are still my favorite dogs. I always order it with the sport peppers but I just squeeze their juice over the dog and toss the rest of the peppers. At Daddy's Hot Dogs in San Diego William slices tiny yellow peppers in half, flicks out the seeds and arranges the peppers on the dog. THAT works great.

OTOH I have lived in NYC a couple of times in my youth and I still like Manhattan style(mustard/kraut) dogs too so when William sees me coming he starts one Chicago and one Manhattan for my lunch.
