Looking at a forlorn box of parts and am thinking...is there a set of downtube shifters that will allow my rear Veloce 10v derailleur to work as a friction mechanism? Doesn't have to be pretty.

Thx!

SunTour Sprint micro ratchet shifters would be nice. But most anything should work.

Pretty much anything will work. Most friction shifters don't have enough throw for 11 speed, but you should be good with 10 or less.

Riv Silver, Dia Compe, any number of others still make them, but any vintage shifter will work, too.

Campy big barrel retrofrictions....if you can find them.

If you prefer the smoother levers, I'd run Dia-Compe Silver downtube shifters (https://www.rivbike.com/collections/shifting/products/silver-downtube-shifter-kits-17101) with an 8-speed cassette. Friction shifting anything over 9-speeds tends to get a little finicky in my experience.

Ohhhh....what about those bar end Shimano shifters set in friction mode? I think the ones I have are 8 speed.

Yes, Shimano barcons in friction mode should do it. Campy derailleurs generally require more pull cable than Shimano, however. The barcons will probably have the range, but the lever might be pointed almost vertical for the lowest gear, which would be awkward.

I'm ok with that. Thank you!!

Pretty much any friction d/t shifter will work but the problem is that the pull of the cable wont be the best if you use a 6sp lever.

What I would do is to find a 10 speed shimano d/t shifter, they even have 11 speed ones. The 10 speed work in friction mode aswell, which is what are you looking for.

Shimano does not make an 11 speed down tube shifter, but 11 speed bar ends can be pressed into service, they just are shorter and look, well, wonky.

The only 10 speed DA down tube shifters with a friction option are 7800's. 7900's are index only.

6207 (Shimano 600, last non indexing group) shifters will pull 10 speed, but it uses an awful lot of throw to do so. Pretty sure the barrel size is the same as the later 10 speed stuff, so should be able to pull 11 speeds.

Edit: Forgot to mention that you can hack a Shimano 11 speed down tube shifter by removing the indexing unit from an 11 speed bar end and dropping it into a down tube lever that accepts a removable indexing unit, such as a Shimano 600 6208 or DA 7800, 7400 or 7402 (there maybe others from the indexing era that use a removable indexing unit, but these for sure).

Best would be big barrel Campag retro friction shifters. Best cuz retro friction so doesn't loosen and easy aft(lower gear) harder forward(higher gear)..PLUS big barrel with that rear der(which takes more cable pull than a non slant paralogram rear der) so it doesn't have to be aaaallll the way aft when in lowest gear..

BTW-I have set FS..PM if ya'd like pix and talk $

This is a stock foto, mine are nice but not NOS.

Has anyone tried simplex retrofrivtion ones in this scenario

I haven’t but the ‘barrel’ of the RH shifter is pretty small. It may not have the travel to get to lowest gear...and the shifter will be aaaallll the way aft.

I use them on my Marinoni to just barely get 9 speeds, if you look closely at the picture you will see I have built up the cable diameter with heat shrink wrap to get all 9 speeds with slightly less than a complete throw. 10 not going to happen!
