View Full Version : Does a 130bcd 38/52 tooth chainring set exist for sram 11sp?

I run Sram Red 22 standard cranks but I'd like to track down a 38t inner ring, and if possible maybe even a 52t outer ring.

I see plenty of 130bcd 38t rings for 10 speed (both sram and FSA), but none for 11 speed drivetrains. How does this work? I was under the impression that the inner widths of 10 and 11 chains are the same but the outsides are narrower on 11. To me this sounds like I can run 10 or 11 speed rings up front (maybe with a slight compromise to shifting speed) without any problems, and the only compatibility issue would be trying to run a 10s chain on an 11s cassette (which I'm not doing)... but before I make a purchase I thought I'd run it by y'all.

So, can it be done?

Also, does anyone know a company that makes 38/52 130bcd ring sets for Sram 22 drivetrains?

Even though it says 10s, I'm sure it'll work with 11s

Don't think a 52t outer exist for 130bcd.

The only chainrings I've seen that are smaller than 53t outer for 130bcd are Rotor q rings (I've seen 50 and 52 offered before).

TA rings..make 130mm BCD and 38 and 52t...10s and 11s..

As an example

Yup, I've got a TA 38 on a Dura Ace 7410 and used to run a 48 big ring but 44-55 was the range I'd seen for 130 big rings from after market like TA and Stronglight.

Huh???

Stronglight makes 130mm BCD outer chainrings from 46 - 54 teeth, and T.A. Specialites makes 130mm BCD outer chainrings from 46 - 61.

I've got 52 and 51 tooth 130mm BCD chainrings, and even a 50 tooth 135mm BCD chainring. I use the 52 frequently on the road, and the 51 is ideal for producing optimal gearing for roller racing.

Think he meant 'sram produced' 52t CRs...

Thanks for the replies!

So I can run 10speed rings on an otherwise 11speed drivetrain?

Yup. Adjust fder accurately and it’ll be fine.

Exactly what I meant. Never heard of T.A. Specialites until this thread. Forgot about Stronglight as a chainring maker (an oversight on my part) so never bother to check on their offerings.

You can NOT run 10 speed or 11 speed chainrings on RED22 crankset unless it is SRAM specific (Force and RED rings will work)

There are two issues:
1. the peg that keeps the chain out of the crankarm gutter will not be in the right place. SRAM clocked the spider to a hidden bolt arrangement.
This is not a big deal. You can live with it.

2. Importantly, The spider shape of that hidden bolt arm is different than the other four on the outer ring.
If you use a standard 130bcd chainring,
1- it will gouge the carbon
2- warp the ring so it will not spin true

You can modify to fit but do not run aftermarket rings on RED22 arms without carefully checking tolerances.

Inner ring is standard 130bcd

No way to use thin spacers to make it run true and all? Shows how much experience I have with sram stuff..not since the early days of sram 10s..folding CRs and all...:)

Thanks for this. I think I'll just track down a 38t inner ring and keep the stock 53t outer as the big-boy.

No, because the spider bolts on the inside face of the chainring on four bolts, and the outside of the face on the hidden bolt. A spacer will only exacerbate the problem

I had the same frustration at Sram's lack of chainring choices.
You can use aftermarket big ring, but you have to modify it for clearance.

When you take off your rings, take a close look at the shape of big chainring mounting tabs and you will see the difference.
