Retrogrouch considering swapping out thirty+ year old Sugino AT cranks with Phil Wood BB. Anderson frame has threaded 68mm bottom bracket shell. Need 5 bolt 110mm BCD, looking for low Q, and black (new Wickwerx double chainring set is black.) Going to run 11 speed drivetrain.

Reasonably light would be nice.

Suggestions for crankset and BB?

It may be an unpopular choice, but sram rival cranks are pretty solid and low key graphics, more so the older gen stuff

Yep, I ride 10 spd and 1X

A pic or two of the frame as well as your desired groupset would probably help!

I really like the older silver Rival on classic bikes.

Good idea! The frame is in a box headed back to Dave Anderson for some work right now. What got me thinking about this is that the Wickwerx 41-33 chainring set that I'm using with the Ultegra 11s 11-34 cassette and Ultegra R8000 GS rear derailleur is black and doesn't look right on the silver Sugino AT crankset. I've ridden the Sugino AT since the 80s on my road bikes due to being able to get low Q with a triple. They are square taper and I run them on Phil Wood BBs. I haven't kept up with the proliferation of BB standards.

So I'm looking for a crankset no heavier than the AT, 110mm BCD 5 bolt, black, that works with a BB that fits a standard old fashioned threaded 68mm BB shell.

A pic or two of the frame as well as your desired groupset would probably help!

TA Vortex may fit your aesthetic. They have a grey finish,110 bolt circle, and ST.

Peter White has them.

What is your budget? That would determine a lot.

SRAM Rival 10 speed OCT.

Or SRAM Red 10 if you want lighter weight and don't mind the carbon effect.

I use both, excellent cranks for the money (i.e. next to nothing second hand).

Seems like I should look into the SRAM cranks. Thanks.

Marc, The Old Spokes Home in Burlington often has NOS parts they pick up here and there.

Maybe not what you are looking for this time, but in the "shop" tab, they have a link to their ebay store, which often has cool stuff. May be something there from time to time that works for the retrogrouch in you!

I like the way SRAM cranks look. I run them with Campagnolo groups. Gasp.

I think this Sugino XD is really pretty. Shown here with Campy 36/50 rings:

Comes in double or triple, fairly light and narrow, any length you want, good quality forged arms... and you can keep that Phil BB. I'll bet a search on eBay would turn up black ones.

Is it nutty to think about getting my Sugino cranks powdercoated black? Or is there another reliable way to coat them that will be durable (some kind of paint?)

I just weighed them and was surprised to see that the cranks and Wickwerx rings are 600g. It looks like I'd have to spend a good chunk to lose some weight over those (recognizing that the Phil BB is hefty and has to be added for a total component weight.)

The Suginos I have look great IMO with the TA Zephyr rings I've been running for years. I got seduced by the 41-33 Wickwerx combo and they come only in black.

You should be able to find somewhere that can anodize them black, alternatively.

Gxp or shimano bbs both work with 68 threaded, so you have choices from new DA to old Red. Exogram gxp reds are very nice cranks if a few grams heavier than their bb30 brothers.
