View Full Version : Help me solve a cable routing problem

Building up a MTB right now setting it up 1x10. The rear derailleur has down tube cable routing. When the cable exits the plastic bottom bracket cable guide heading back toward the brazed on chain stay cable boss which feeds it into the rear D housing, the cable is gonna hit the tire on the way back there due to the curvy chain stays..

Seems like there are several solutions but what’s the simplest most elegant one?

-could kludge another zip tie cable guide onto the Chainstay using a housing end or something. Glue them together?

- could run full length housing back there with a housing end stop somehow exiting the plastic bottom bracket cable guide...

-an extra wide B.B. cable guide? Does such a thing exist?

What am I not seeing? What would you do?

Many thanks in advance,

JZ

got any pictures? particularly of the BB area?
had it been functional previously?

some of the bottom bracket guides have the ability to be shifted side to side, rather than placed at a fixed point by the screw..could find one that lets you slide the cable over, but if it's hitting the tire without having mud on it...i'm not sure how much clearance youd be afforded with that type of a slider guide.

It's a 1x, so even if the second hole in the BB guide isn't sufficient, just drill a new one through the plastic.

Shimano used to include the purple guide with every set of shifters, so your LBS will probably give you another one if you goof it up.

Not an MTB expert, but I use full length housing on my MTB and cross bikes.

Yup. This.
Exposed cables and dirt/water don't play nice.

And to the extent necessary, a zip tie can be used to secure the housing to the curved chain stay.

OK, I split the diff. between full length housing and whatever other options out there. Not my most elegant solution, but it made sense based on how the cable stops were set up on this ride, and found a cable guide in my parts bin to help, had it from my main MTB back from before it was singlespeed.

Here's what I came up with. The purple Shimano deal wasn't going to send it out the right angle...
