Ot: live edge table

Anyone buy much off Etsy? I’ve bought a few things, but never furniture. I came across this little tale for sale over the holidays and bought it on a whim. It was cheap...with cheap shipping. $100.00, with shipping $113.00.

Anyway, I thought it would make a nice little surprise for my wife and useful for the living room.

It arrived today and is just gorgeous.

To me.

I put a coat of linseed oil on it and man the grain just pops. Maybe a little quirky with the three legs and the live edge shape, but I love it.

You would’ve thought I bought her the one legged lamp off a Christmas story. Hates it.

“You can put it in your bike room” was her suggestion.

So, what do you think of my new bike room table?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I've been a furniture maker for 25 years and a lot of my work (in the last 6 or 7 years anyway) has used live-edged lumber. I find it very intersting.

Most makers who work with live-edge material have been influenced by George Nakashima, a fascinating man who introduced the material to the studio furniture movement in this country in the second half of the 20th century. He lead an inspirational life and was wonderfully creative and thoughtful.

It's not everyone's cup of tea however. Your piece has a nice top. Maybe not the most interesting leg treatment, but that comment only reflects my visual preferences.

Sorry your wife isn't too whipped up about the table. It was a thoughtful gift.

Beautiful work! I reallly like the cross-cross table...very simple and elegant.

Brought the slab home and worked on it during my spare time. Came out pretty nice given my minimal wood working experience. Still holding up well too!

Fortunately, you can go back to Etsy and get some nice table legs! They have some black cast iron ones that look really nice.

Yep. New table legs are a quick fix. The top looks great, just would benefit from more appropriate legs IMO.

Dang! That maple board on the double rail table is dreamy. Nice work.

To the OP: embellish your table with some old bike parts and it will fit right in.

like the top, change the legs , go to 4 legs and it will still be a bargain. black metal would make the top stand out.

I was thinking the same thing. Make the legs out of bent rebar which is either painted flat black, or left in a natural patina.
