And not a disc brake bike to be seen(altho I'll bet there were a few...maybe)

What gives? I thought this was the 'year of the disc brake' in the pro pelOton?

The Tour Down Under takes place well before the 'traditional' start of the Pro (read "European") cycling season. The equipment sponsors frequently have not yet delivered the current season's bikes and/or components yet, so the teams end up racing on the previous year's bikes, or sometimes some hodge-podge of old and new equipment.
