View Full Version : New Years Weekend Rides

Kicking off the New Years Weekend I got home early today, jumped onto the bike and took off, it was in the mid 50's after all. Plugged all the data into a very precise algorithm and concluded I had 1:20 of riding up this climb before I had to spin around and head home to beat dark-thirty. So I get about 3 minutes from turning around when I see the small herd of mule deer on the trail. Ahh, what the heck, I'll turn around now, don't want to make them run, they're eating. About 3-4 minutes later I come across a very fresh single set of Mountain Lion tracks, walking down the trail, same direction I'm going now, they turned off about 50 feet later. Now remember, I was just here about 12-14 minutes ago, and those tracks weren't there. If I saw them at 20 mph, I darn sure would have seen them at 6. Insert wide eyes here. Ok, it's downhill now, time to roll. I know, I know, I wouldn't stand a chance in that race, but it made me feel better.

Looks like a nice ride and sounds like you had fun.

I knocked out 32 miles myself but it was a tad cooler at a little above freezing.

Knocked mine out yesterday while it was still nice out. No outside riding for me for at least a week as we stay below my fun zone.

Maiden voyage for the buffalo covered commuter.

Happy new year!

No riding here, too busy trying to heat the house. Just came in from cutting up some hedge posts for the small boiler. Need to get back out but it doesn't take long to numb fingers. Temps are above zero right now, but we're headed for possible record lows and highs below zero the next few days. We got 5 or 6" of new snow last night, so about 9" to wade through now.

Nice to see that the Civia turned out well.

Friday morning was the "Opener," which is basically a one hour coffee ride with a hard effort (though not everyone participates in the hard part) up the hill before ending at shop approved of by the coffee snob.

This morning I did the Swami's "B" ride and I felt victorious since I was somewhat expecting to get dropped but did not.

Tomorrow will be a coastal ride up through Camp Pendleton.

Monday will be the Factor Bikes/Roleur Brewing ride, which will be going through where the Lilac Fire was earlier this month. I may actually take (and post) pictures from that ride. I don't normally take pictures during rides.

Tuesday morning should be a hard (if I don't get dropped) early morning ride followed by a return to "adulting."

-28 C here this morning. I will have to keep my ride under 4 hours...lol. Even the dog did not want to go out for a pee this morning he took two steps and turned around.

Yeah at -9F here I might go XC ski for a little bit......or play some pond hockey.
But nothing involving a bicycle!

Knowing that the artic cold front is moving in quickly today and tomorrow and bringing with it rain, sized the opportunity to ride everyday over the last three days. Did a solo fat bike ride on Thursday, rode with a friend who is recovering from a broken collarbone Friday , and this was from yesterday, riding with a new group first time on a hilly route.my friend Rick was holding on to the dog that belonged to the nice old lady who volunteered to take our pictures. Plan on hiding inside the house the next couple of days.

It is still -16 right now at my house. As much as I enjoy a nice brisk winter ride it is just too cold to be out on a bicycle.

Hell, no. Most folks wouldn't venture out even if the "minus" was a "plus".

A frigid start to the New Year, no doubt.

Yeah, go ahead and rub it in. Minus 19 at 9am this morning. Beautiful blue skies out there, but a bit chilly, I'd say.

So I'll be watching the 1990 Tour de France while spinning along surrounded by four white walls. Who says you can't ride in shorts and shirtsleeves in January.

definitely no riding for me this weekend.Must of been drinking some strong whiskey or something to be able to withstand last nights frigid weather. I'm built like a bear and I can't stay outside for more than 10 minutes in these temps.

None. Practically the entire continent is experiencing record cold. We're in the middle of a two-week stretch that's ten degrees below normal (that's "a lot" in the old Fahrenheit system, for those that use it). Not even the mountain bike is getting any run these days.

The Y is cozy and warm. My jump shot keeps getting better...

First ride of 2018 for me today. Temps have been dropping every day all weekend, started with highs in the 50's, it's a bluebird 27 now. Elected to ride the mtb for a couple of hours today, staying primarily in the woods, out of the wind, away from hungover drivers. Completely uneventful, refreshing, and stress free, just how I hope the rest of the year goes for all of us.

After writing this I decided to get off my keister and take the mountain bike out. It was my coldest ride ever, and it only lasted 40 minutes, but forging ahead and keeping your balance on lightly packed snow that you sink down into is a good workout. And like always, the golden maxim of cycling holds true: You never regret a bike ride.

You never come back from a ride without feeling great. You never come back in and think, meh, probably shoulda just stayed at home and watched TV.

Right? Cycling is awesome. This deep freeze we're in has left me in a funk even in spite of the good times I've been having with family and friends. Because as much as I like playing basketball at the Y, there's just nothing like a bike ride.

You can depend on it.

Hit the dirt roads in Elbert, CO. It was a chilly 32F, windy and the roads were quite empty but I did hit some awful washboard sections that really killed me. I had not been out here in years. Got in about 32 miles or so and I was hurting at the end.

This time of year most people lay down their base miles. Not me, it's all about the watts and the Watt Ranch 'training facility'.

Back in the states just for a two weeks (Been working in China). Went home home to Tucson for the holidays... Did my Saguaro National Monuments (East/West) loop.
