I liked my last Eureka fine but it crapped out after perhaps 10 hours of use. Went looking locally on Saturday: they had about 50 uprights on display but not a single canister. I have wood floors throughout the house, so no need for an upright. I like a canister that's easy to carry, has good suction, and hopefully filters fairly well. Suggestions?

Buy/order one from COSTCO because if you don't like it you can return it easily.I gather that you don't need a vacuum with a power head and rotating brushes?

No, just need to suck up dust, hay, and the leaves I track in.

Small shop vac on wheels? OTOH some of the stick vacs might be just right.

My experience with various brands of shop vacs is that the filtration is poor. My current (Shop Vac brand) spits out a big plume of dust out the exhaust every time it's switched on. Not what I want for the house (or the shop either for that matter). Shop vacs also generally lack decent heads for floors.

I bought an old Tristar canister vac on craigslist for <$100. Suction isn't as good as more modern machines, but it's reliable and serviceable, and does the job well enough. The "Be done with it" canister vacuum is made by Sebo, from what I've learned. I'd rather spend that much on bikes.

Bissill "Zing (https://www.bissell.com/zing-bagged-canister-vacuum-4122?LanguageOK=1&PID=google_{campaign}_&mkwid=sCbLcXqB2_pcrid_178097104965_pkw__pmt__pdv_c _product_4122_slid__&ptaid=pla-385376948620&gclid=CjwKCAiApo3SBRA4EiwAty8i-skEtvcCiJU5kjThqVoZcLNGyFCGjGm3fHE6fHmbLRJT0N8IAsz 7RRoCpPIQAvD_BwE&pgrid=25185203699)" is good, and has a bag which makes it much preferable to the bagless type. $49 list, and you can get 15% off that on Bissell's own website.

I'm not sure why canister vacs are necessary for wood floors so I apologize in advance for my answer.

Consumer Reports said uprights always outperform canister vacs ( think it had something to do with the motor size limitations in canister vacs) so that's what I'd recommend. Maybe there's one out there that works well with wood floors.

This is probably the right answer--although they don't qualify as cheap.

I see some go by on eBay used though (I was looking for a while because ours was acting up a little after 10 years of hard use--but I fixed it)--and I would take a good used Meile ahead of anything else out there.

I'm very happy with the vacuum at link below. It is a convertible, both an upright and canister in one.

My local Miele dealer sells used ones that retailed new for $500 and up for $300 with a 3 year guarantee on everything.
