View Full Version : Which color for my Colnago?

Matthew

I decided to get my EPS painted instead of trying to sell a bike to get the Zabel EPS listed here. Struggling on which color. I know I am going with either the Zabel blue or Saronni red with white panels. Both schemes are the same. I have always wanted a lighter blue color with panels so was initially leaning Zabel but then I started to check out the Saronni scheme and am now torn! That red is just beautiful. If you were choosing between the two what would you pick? Appreciate your thoughts. Matthew

This thread needs a poll.

100% Zabel.

Saronni is great, and I love it too, but Zabel is blue, beautiful, less flashy, more sophisticated, less common, and, most important, your first choice.

For some reason I prefer Saronni on Colnago steel, and Zabel on Colnago carbon.

Ask the painter if you can go with a chromed base then add maybe candy blue and leave half of the stays (chain, seat and fork) chromed???

Or maybe 4 different candy colors for each tube leaving the lugs chromed?

I tried to add a poll but for some reason I couldn't figure it out!! I am far from the smartest when it comes to computer stuff for sure. Trying to keep the cost down so any chrome and such will certainly drive the price up!! Thanks for the input though.

I agree but man I love Saroni.... so I will say Saroni.

I lost this one on ebay for $50. Was bummed.

and this is what he had to say about that badge

"The head tube logo is not a decal. I have added a gold plated brass head tube badge with lacquer painted highlights."

Haha that's funny. I was literally just looking at that exact EPS in the sold section.

What??? That bicycle sold for $2616.56 shipped? That was a heck of a deal.

But, I still vote Zabel.

yeah it was. I bid like 2500 and lost by $26.

The components on that bike are worth that, frame is free.

Easily. Really nice bicycle, and kitted/painted like that most likely in superb condition.

And with all your bike woes this year I wish you had won it.

If that where really true it would have sold for more.

Dont get me wrong, Its a really cool bike, I considered buying it myself but somehow it just did not do it for me.

Yes, gorgeous, and more special imo.

I'm telling you:
Saronni on steel, Zabel on carbon.

I remember doing the math and it was pretty close. Those cranks go for good money, super record, enve wheels to king hubs. Sometimes you get good deals on ebay. That bike was at $1000 until a few hours before it ended.

^^ This exactly. The oversized tubes of the EPS call out for a more striking color especially with the black cut ins on the fork etc. Saronni can be striking but typically blends in as another shade-of-red frame at times. The light blue / Belgium blue is really popular now, but this shade is different. Al will kill it too with the details. I personally would even consider mixing it up just a tad and color match the stem and have the Colnago text/logo.

(Paulo - $50 bucks?? Man, I would have been glued to my screen watching that one - probably would have overpaid in the end :crap:

Here is a slightly different, Saronni-esque bike that has a bit more pop and I really like the black detailing. Get rid of the hideous LW wheels and you have a sweet looking bike...

Wow, you are so right...whoever did those LWs like that has some serious issues!

And...Zabel looks better on Colnago c-f even with Lightweights! :D
(No LW decals = even better.)

If it makes you feel better, remember that losing an auction by $50 doesn't mean you would win it for $51. The winner could have had a provisional bid $1000 higher. You never know. Does that help you sleep better?:)

that zabel color really reminds me of the blue mini used to use that i always thought looked just fantastic when i saw them on the road.

Thanks for the input guys. I just shipped the frameset off this morning! The current paint scheme is AMIT. I like it but it just doesn't speak to me like the other two. The top tube and down tubes are white with the seat tube and stays clear coated carbon. Has a few accents of red, green, and gold. Nice but not my first choice. And after seeing Robj's Mapei recent new paint I got a hold of Allan Wanta and decided to get mine done. I am leaning toward the Zabel scheme. I think if I don't go with the blue I may wish I had down the road. Light blue is very popular right now but that's probably for good reason. It just looks great. And the Serotta above is gorgeous!!! I like the Zabel as well, but I'm personally not wild about the bare carbon sections. It makes it too busy to my eye.

I think I'd paint it solid Zabel blue and talk to the painter about how else you could emphasize the carbon.

Matthew
12-19-2017, 09:26 AM
I like the bare carbon sections! In fact I made sure Allan would do the same scheme with the carbon sections exposed. I prefer the detail of the paint coming to a point on the fork legs etc.
