I'm glad the path is open but the construction job is the worst I have ever seen.
All that poorly hung mesh will be covered with pigeon poop and feathers in no time. It really compliments the cable guards they installed years ago that have rusted out on the bottom because they were too cheap to make them out of stainless steel and too lazy to paint them.
Another PA slap in the face to what once was a beautiful bridge.

The new netting on south sidewalk is quite utilitarian, not attractive at all, but appears it will meet its objectives. Hopefully the upcoming permanent fix will be a bit more visually appealing and drop the military jungle bunker look.

...was able to get in about 35 miles this afternoon. Froze my a@% off but it was refreshing...albeit, after about 20 miles couldn't get much water out of my frozen bottle.

Absolutely serious. Used to ride in Minnesota winters. Water starts freezing from the top, and if the nozzle is a little frozen, no more water. Keep it upside down, and you still get water when half of it is solid.

+! on the upside down bottle. Learned this cycling through northern IL winters. Now, down here in western Kentucky it's not as much of an issue.

Didn't realize the south walkway was closed, when did that happen? I rode it in September as part of a Bear Mountain Bridge GW bridge loop, was a great day.

And yes, he was serious about the upside down water bottles.

Edit: Also, the insulated water bottles from Camelbak and others do pretty well at keeping your water liquid for longer. And lastly, you have to remember to drink more often, even just a little bit, to keep the nozzle ice free.

Winter riding = Camelback insulated bottles filled with HOT tap water and a splash of hot tea or something for a little flavor. At 30 degrees +/-, that's good for about an hour+ without freezing.

I hate cold winter, for the record.

While on topic, how hot can water/liquid be before damaging a Camelbak insulated bottle? Hot tap water it can obviously handle; boiling water probably (?) not. What about, say, water that has just been brought to a simmer?
