I’m building confidence. First ride today after a collarbone break in a wreck 5 weeks ago. 12 mile easy spin. Not pain free but much more comfortable than I originally thought and the pain wasn’t at the break site. Felt good to be on the bike spinning and getting comfortable.

Thanks for the interest in the Sintesi.

I am the third owner of this frameset. A close friend was the original owner and raced it for two seasons back in the 90s. The next owner built it with DA 7700 and rode it twice in ten years. I bought it when he was clearing his garage.

Two years ago I stripped the DA and it has been hanging on a hook till recently. A friend is building it up for me and I usually just finish his builds with tires, cages, bar tape, saddle etc.

I've owned quite a few Tommasinis over the years and they have always been exceptionally nice riding bikes.

This will be a decent winter project. We are making a few changes since this pic with a different wheelset, bars and some Veloflex Masters. 700x25s barely fit!

Nope. And his rear brake, the cable adjuster, it's on super wrong. The adjuster piece is under the arm not on top with the cable stop. BUT, he could just be doing this to avoid it falling out of the arm/brake itself. He has the same for the front so I am betting it's so they won't fall out.

Mission accomplished.

A 1988 Cannondale touring bike is inbound, which currently has 6 speed DT shifters. All consumables will need to be replaced. Has 27" rims, will probably lace the hubs (if they're good) to 700c rims and use Compass 32mm tires. Would like to use suntour command shifters but not sure if they will work with 6 speed SIS.

Just finished rebuilding this over the holidays and rode a few miles over New Year day. Frameset and cabling are new. The rest of components were transferred over from an old bike.

I took a chance as I didn't know anything about Enigma. And I'm happy with the result. Frameset/bike was solid both for climbing and descent. Really looking forward to many more miles on this baby.

weisan -- Ride report on your Cervelo?

Keith pal, I am not very good in giving ride report but I will do my best.

It's the lightest bike I have ridden so far. About 15 Ibs.

My frame of reference or comparison is with the other carbon bike I have, Cyfac Absolu.

The Cyfac is a full on race bike. It can do everything well.

The first time I was able to really put some serious miles/tests on the cervelo, I remembered getting off the bike and thinking to myself. "Huh, interesting. This is 90% Cyfac at 1/5 of the price. Not a bad deal,"

It seems to me like the designers of cervelo R3 have intentionally built in comfort zone into the bike and they were apparent to me. It's "soft" in all the right places to make it an awesome all-day bike. It doesn't beat you up, in fact, it carasses you as you ride. Ok, I will stop there before it gets all erotic, but you get my point. It's definitely stiff enough for the 25-30 mph high torque paceline flying at full speed, no problem there.

One other aspect of it is, it may or may not appeal to everyone in terms of aesthetics with its sloping top tube, squarish-looking downtube, big fat bottom bracket area. It's designed on a computer, what do you expect? :D
I like it. I like to mix things up, both traditional and the modern.

In a sense, I broke my own rule, not to have duplicates within my collection. It matches the Cyfac the closest in terms of "intended use". I think what I will do is take it out whenever the group I ride with is a bit more mellow, still fast, but doesn't require me to bring my sharpest tool like the Cyfac.

Talking about not duplicating function, I think I just committed the same sin again yesterday when adding this newest member to the team. http://alicehui.com/bike/hampsten/IMG_4247.JPG

I just finished building it yesterday and haven't got the chance to ride it yet and probably won't till it gets a bit warmer over the weekend. I can already tell it's going to ride very similar to the taylor and the Rivendell, both designed to perform optimally with 32-35mm tires. Oh well, having multiple options is a good thing.

my local peloton went cervello crazy a number of years back. one of the lbs's started carrying them and marketing them hard. a bunch of people bought them and literally loved the ride - but they almost all broke in some form or another. i got the impression cervello, at least in the earlier days really pushed the envelope in terms of weight and performance - at the expense of durability. i dont know if they fixed all that, but i know it turned off a whole bunch of people.

It was cold as hell today so I stayed indoors all day, sat by the fireplace, took out the knitting needle and started knitting...all done now, used up what is my last pair of older SL23 v1. pacenti rims. Found a stash of them at the co-op a couple of years ago, apparently donated from a bike shop that has closed for business, never had any issue with them except the occasional difficulty with mounting certain tires, has more to do with technique sometimes. These wheels are ready to go into service as soon as the 28mm gravel king tires from cicli pal come in the mall.

I highly recommend Roger Musson's wheelbuilding book (online pdf version). This is how I got started, and truth be told, this is all I use to build my first pair of wheels and subsequently it's practice, practice, practice.

Thanks - I grew up riding hard-tails and rigid MTBs in the 90s, and then transitioned to the road. I've had a few small patches in between where I had an MTB in the garage, but even then I gravitated still to the light/fast end of the spectrum. I've got in my mind that I'm going to race some endurance events this year - maybe 6 Hrs of Mt. Hood, or Cascade 100 - so I figured staying on the light/fast track was a good way to go. But honestly, I have so much to learn and re-learn it's a little mind-boggling. The technology is just insanely different. I'm going to give it a go though. Guess I'm off to reset my password on mtbr.com and try to find some peeps to show me the trails up here...

Clearcoat, or clear helicopter tape is all I could think of to protect a signature on a bike. I have one from merckx on a bike that I thought about trying to preserve it with either method. The clearcoat wasnt a practical option as im not that good a painter and I thought about how solvents in the clear may actually remove the signature, or just make it look really bad, or it would get pulled off if the tape got dirty and had to be removed. So I'm just going to enjoy it as long as it lasts and not worry.

Beautiful and not even cracked!!

Clear tape but even that will yellow over time. Depending on how it's written, with what, some clear spray but that might 'dissolve' it.

It would look great with Potenza or maybe 2018 Centaur also..or Record..just Campag...Andy would approve.

I think I'm going to start with Chorus11 5-arm and Record/Nemesis wheels to get it built this weekend, and then decide if I switch it over to some new SR11 and Shamals at some point, or sell that stuff off instead to replenish the bike account...

Thanks. The picture doesn't really capture the blue bands on the frame/fork that match the headset spacers - probably my favorite aspect of it..

The post is a Deda Superzero in Polish on Black. And the stem is a Deda Trentacinque Elementi in the same. 25mm setback on the post. 130mm stem.

It seems like the rails are supported well, so I'm not expecting issues, but we'll see when I get it out for a ride!

Overhauling my 1989 Cannondale ST600 - it's not been an easy build. issues with the old headset which has been replaced - issue with the BB which has been replaced - issues with the rear hub cones and cups which is still not resolved. The original rims are 27" which severely limits tire choices. I may be able to save the rear hub, but no guarantee.

When it's all said and done, there will be new dual-pivot brake calipers and new TRP RRL levers. 700c rims laced to NOS hubs, 35mm Compass tires, and a new Selle Anatomica saddle.

Should be a very nice ride when I finally get this all together.

Cold season is in full effect across the country (and I'm nursing a minor injury here in SoCal), let's see what builds you have going on.

I picked this up complete for essentially no money, rebuilding it from the frame up (besides the Cane Creek 40 it came with).

https://www.pedalroom.com/p/all-city-macho-man-2-electric-boogaloo-39014_1.jpg

Build includes some nice handbuilt wheels and 2x10 SRAM clutch group. Trying out a 46t/33t chainring combo with 11/32 cassette. Going to give RevoX cantis a shot, but might settle for TRP CX8.4s.

Also, since bottle cages are a hot topic tonight, this came with some Velo-Orange knock-offs of the King Iris Cage that are somehow more expensive and flimsier than the Kings?

Put 700x32s on my Felt Breed that's built for 650x47s - should be able to swap wheels for road training vs. gravel days...

Got PDW fenders ready to go, just need the mounting kit from Felt.

Also put narrower flared bars on there, but now have ridiculous cables up front.

That All-City up there is the Space Horse? I'm sorta cruising one of those on eBay but I'd like to hear your impression before I bite.

Me, I'm grudgingly building up the Soma Stanyan I can't seem to sell here. Help me out, y'all: should I go full Suntour XC-Pro with twist-shifters on a Lauterwasser handlebar, and White Ind/TB14 wheels? Or, kickback 2-speed with a banana seat & sissy bar?

("None of the above" is only allowed as an answer if you're gonna buy it.)

Extra credit question: should I braze canti posts on it, raise the brake bridge to increase tire clearance, and have it powder-coated lemon-chiffon yellow? This would be a pretty desperate direction to go in, because doing it right would require a new fork too...

I don't respond well to the onset of winter. Never have.

That’s a smart mod with the removable stabilizer. Is there anything that limits how far you back the bike can rotate? I’ve seen some that essentially bungee the front wheel.

These really don't work. There's a huge difference when the bike is moving compared to using this "manual machine"
The best way I learned was just looping the bike until I was getting comfortable
finding balance.

This is the Macho Man, but I've had both (this is actually my second Macho Man). The Space Horse is a great bike, I ended up preferring the tighter handling of the Macho Man, especially since I am not using the rack mounts or extra load capacity that is available on the Space Horse. This is a big day in the rebuilding of this model! It is the first time it has been in assembled form for many decades. My grandmother and grandfather took a steamship in the mid 30's to Australia, Bali, Japan and Hawaii and I think Tahiti.

When they came back through Japan, my grandmother bought this model for my mother, who was too small to come on the voyage. It is hand made, of individual sticks or slats or slabs of bamboo. Some of them are flamed to give a caramel color and sheen, all are treated in some way to change the texture. The main house comes apart: The roof lifts off, and the ceiling is set up to lock the four walls together. Lift this off, and one can see the floor of the room with the six tatami mats. There is a scroll hanging on the back wall. All the shoji screens slide, but I haven't sourced rice paper yet to refinish them. There are two pivoting open front boxes on two corners, which have the cold weather or storm panels for their respective facades within. On the left of the house is a kitchen shed, with a stove, pots, a wood pile and a well, with buckets on a string. Right behind the house, between the kitchen and the house, is a privy, with an open urinal facing in and a toilet with an operating door. There is a soil drawer under the toilet. The detail is amazing, and some of the pieces, like the roofing tiles, exquisitely done. It describes carefully and lovingly life in another time and place. I admired it when I was a kid, and my Mom gave me the box with the parts last year.

I have carefully rebuilt this from MANY pieces. Some I could figure out where old glue lines lined up, which could be seen with a loupe. Some I could locate where there was a shadow line, the mark of time. And in a few places there were numbers written on the back, to show where things went. The model was designed to be easily disasembled so you can see everything easily. I've still got some ways to go, but at this point it can be understood as a composition. There is a ruler (good ol' US feet and inches, the system that put a man on the moon) in front so you can get a sense of scale.

As near as I can gather, this kind of craft was not uncommon in the years leading up to WWII, but disappeared almost entirely in '37-8 when imperial Japan began to make its move. If any of you have ever seen such a thing as this, and can help me shed light on it, I'd be happy to know more about it.

Anyway, that's what I've been building today.:)

That structure looks pretty tidy. Kinda small for any bike making needing CNC equipment, is that the goal? Or are you rather making tools in that toolroom?

It is a bit smaller than I really wanted but there’s enough room to get the machines in there and have enough room to work. The goal really isn’t to make a bunch of frames.....just feed the need to make things in general when I retire.

Thinking about 650b on a beat up Colnago Mexico as a weird rat rod that will surely piss some folks off. It's a unique situation though, and I would never do it to a mint one. The frame is like a size and a half too large, so I'm dragging my feet on putting $500 into it. Could be weird though! Oh, and it's SL MS with chrome lugs.

Not crazy about the post, waiting on some new pedals, and trying to decide if it needs a white saddle.Nitto post, or a Dura Ace 7410 post, would look great as would silver cranks. My 7-11 bike is a work in progress, built with what I thought I wanted, then ride and change as opportunity presents itself. Many motorola team bikes had white tape and black saddle, so if a modernized team-replica is the look you are after its good with that saddle.

Nitto/Sim-Works (by Nitto)/DA7410 are the short list for seatposts.

The only silver cranks I would want is Dura-Ace 9000 or White Industries, and those are both still hard to come by under $200, so no rush there.

Honestly don't know anything about OVAL. I salvaged the rim from the co-op a few weeks ago, happened to have a 18h hub sitting around, decided to go ahead and build it up. Also got a matching rear OVAL wheel from a friend several months ago who got it from another friend who had left behind after he passed away from cancer.

It's really interesting how seemingly unrelated events come together and produce a result like this.

Probably most fun I’ve had lately.
Paint the frame, grease the wheel bearings, they hardly turned.

Looks good! What did you use for underneath the slate? I've never installed slate tile before. Is it a cement board underlayment and mud?

Sent from my XT1650 using Tapatalk

I've been using Schluter Ditra plastic membrane--goes down with thinset, and then regular thinset on top to set the slate. (First I doubled up on the plywood with a second layer screwed down to the subfloor.)

I've done cement board as well,, but I like the Ditra version better--lighter and more isolation from cracking. I did the kitchen floor with the same slate (bought a pallet way back for a song, and have slowly been using it), and it has been down for almost 10 years, and have had zero problems (although in that case I also reinforced the joists because the span for the floor joists was a little long...)

My buddy has some pretty big slabs of blue slate that were the original sidewalk around his home. Always wanted to incorporate them somewhere in one of my projects.

Love this so much! I just started the process of getting a Kirk. For months leading up to making a final decision one option I had been considering was very similar to this in terms of color scheme. Ultimately I'm going in a different direction, but this really is very very nice. Cant wait to see the build finalized. Congratulations!

Full thickness slate might require a full mortar bed & more reinforcement--this is pretty thin, only 10mm/3/8" so it is more like ceramic. It's Brazilian, cut just under 12" in width, but random lengths. I've worked with the heavier stuff, but only outside on a dry-laid base of gravel and stone dust.

I don't think I can really say "today"--but this is in process. Had a bad month or so with flu and what not, so everything is backed up, but I want to have this ready to go when the snow melts.

Nobilette frame courtesy of temeyone, picked up in B'lynn--formerly Adam's...
Arenberg tub wheels courtesy of Clean39
tubs courtesy of campy man
Deda seatpost courtesy of montag

(those Deda bars were cheap--but they weigh a ton!)

This was just a test assembly--still thinking about the finishing...

'Why' more than a few of 'us' frequent this and other, forums cuz there is a LOT of misinformation out there along with just bad info(like the tape 'holding' this tubular on)...

I've even talked to some guy who said gluing a tubular isn't really necessary cuz the tire holds onto the rim 'really well' when inflated..'like a clincher'. Or that 32h is stronger than 36h =cuz there are one fewer spaces with parallel spokes....etc..:)

I rode a tandem with my brother in a charity event, lets just say now I get the reason why they call a tandem bike "a divorce", really no fun for either of us. I am guessing if the fit of the bike where spot on that would help, but you really have to be "in sync" otherwise its like wrestling a bear at time. It was an interesting experience, but not one I want to repeat anytime soon.

best

Living where I do, Indonesia, I get that people need to be extra resourceful to keep things rolling, but there is a limit. If you are taking part in competitions on carbon rim brake wheels on grades exceeding 15% this (paper tape) is SO far beyond acceptable that it needs to be mentioned. Another issue, why are technical inspections not catching this. This wheel was bought to me as the RD has contacted the spokes. I also found corroded, inverted standard alloy nipples serving as intetnal nipples...

playing with the "final" details on the first go at a low cost wheel lacing jig that a friend helped me make.

When I say he helped me make, I mean, he asked what I would want in a lacing jig (having never used one myself, I had no idea) and he looked at other designs out there, and made one. So, I guess that means I maybe helped him make it?

Lots of 3D printed parts, or stuff from the hardware store.

I think we've got like $55-60 in parts in it?
