I don't think the rim brake is going anywhere for a while. Its funny because, there are some really good rim brake rims right now. All those new ceramic rims are fantastic, great braking, they look the part, weight is also very nice.

carbon rims are also getting better and better, I am sure if they keep at it they will eventually not have a single heating issue.

LOL. Rim brakes are going to need a movement like that for sure. They are destined for the same fate as toe clips/straps, quill stems, friction shifters ....Eroica events and the Smithsonian.

My primary gripe about the disc brake movement is that all of my road wheels and bikes have rim brakes. I've got a substantial investment in all of that. Changing to disc brakes to solve a problem (that is not a problem for me) would be stupid.

The difference between quill stems, toe straps and friction shifters versus disc brakes is that all of the aforementioned obsolete items did not require a consumer to buy a new bike, or even new wheels. Those changes were cheaper and less involved.

Last week I rode with two buddies who were on disc bikes and I on my CSI with rim brakes and 28's and after traversing over road, canal, and gravel surfaces I'm happy to report I lived to tell the tale.

being in the market to replace a few bikes I have been going back and forth with the rim v. disk. It will be disk for off road but they seem like a solution looking for a problem for the road.

The problem they look for and so far found on the road on the road is that carbon rim manufactures have not resolve the heat issue. If they do it will be those damn uglys they go extinct.

Just keep buying rim brakes.

The bicycle has seen very little real innovation in 100 years, so manufacturers are reduced to churning through endless variations on a theme: anatomic vs. classic bars, threaded vs. non-threaded, enough bottom bracket standards to make your head spin, and 9 speed, 10, speed, 11 speed...gah. The whole disk brake thing is just more of the same.

Disk brakes are heavy. Complex. Rim brakes are already powerful enough to send you over the bars if you over-apply them. Pro riders might get paid to use disk brakes in the classics in a desperate attempt to get you to want them, but you don't need them.
