View Full Version : Creative ways to mount Fly6 rear light/camera (not on the seatpost)?

I'd like to use my Fly6 rear light/camera on a bike that's usually sporting a Carradice saddle bag, leaving no room for the light on the seatpost where the light is designed to go.

I'm thinking that there must be something that can clamp to the seat stays somehow — solo or bridged — that would also have a vertical rod of some sort that would take a light attachment. Problem Solvers has something close, but no cigar.

I'm wondering if anyone in the same predicament has found a workable solution?

My older bikes I mount it on the seat tube and it peeks out between the seat stays. My two bikes with wishbone stay I just keep tools in my jersey pocket. Another option would be to use a little triathlete bento box for your tools on the top tube.

I wish I could mount the light on the seat tube but it would still be obscured by the Carradice bag, which is a Super-C and on the large side. The seat and chain stays are the only tubing that isn’t obstructed in the rear by the bag.

What I do for mounting a rear light when I have a large seat bag attached is use this (mine is different brand though):

https://problemsolversbike.com/files/product_images/QRNUT_Light_Mount_wTigerMoth.jpg

However I don't know how well that would work for a camera, as the wheel would be partly in your field of view. On the other hand that would also be the case for a seatstay mount so ...

And it's also not vertical ... this isn't much use is it.

I have the same seat bag issue. I turn it upside down (to get the camera angle right) then mount it on the seat stay just above the brake bridge. Image is upside down, of course, but I figure if I never needed it at least the images are there.

I know this is not what is being asked but my fly 6 just broke and I have a few of the things that came with it (wedges, the aero wedge), a few plastic straps, ect.

If anyone wants them, pay shipping and I will send your way.

I am sad, I love this cam/light, I may have to buy the new one.

Do you have photos of what space is available?

Timely thread. I just bought a used one and I might be facing the same issue. However, the seller included a 3D printed camera mount that I could zip tied to the seat post (less easy to be stolen or fall off.) I think I can probably zip tie it to the seat stays.

No solution for your problem, but I too got a Fly6 over the summer and I use it only part of the time, mostly because I don't have a lot of exposed seatpost and I'm in the same boat.

Ive not used them, but there are 3d printed options available for different mounting positions. They supposedly have a little less stability for image quality, but there are probably some video samples out there if you search enough.

Unsure of the fly6 mount but i screwed my rear light to the fender mount on the side of the seatstay. May be able to get creative with that

Google to the rescue. Thanks weisan for doing that. The bottommost image might be the most appropriate. That's the old version of the Fly6 that had a slightly different (and more adaptable) mounting system.

What kind of saddle do you use? This guy has a bunch of different 3D Printed mounts/adapters/connectors...etc. (I now see that this was posted earlier).

On one of my bikes I use his mount for my Varia that allows me to use a saddle bag and the light/radar.

The new Fly6 CE and Fly12 CE are available for preorder.

https://cycliq.com

According to DCRainmaker, they have some significant improvements, in that they now use Bluetooth LE to sync with phones, videos can be transferred to and displayed on cell phones, and they have Ant+ so Garmin devices can control the lights. The Fly12 also is smaller and less ugly.

Here’s the “hands on” review from DCRainmaker. https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2017/11/cycliq-fly6ce-fly12ce-first-look.html

yeah...I got the fly 6 used and I have been debating whether to order the current version or forked up an extra $110 for the new one. It is definitely less ugly, brighter, and cool to synch up with Garmins.

yeah I think its worth waiting for the new one. I think I am going to get it myself.

The old one was nice, even though mine broke ahha, was not a fan of the strap system but I though batt life was decent so was light output.

My pet peeve about the old Fly6 was setting the date. While I own a PC, I use it for little and rarely plug in the Fly6. I charge it on an Anker USB charger with all my other electronics. The problem is that unless you set the time and date regularly, there is significant drift and the times and dates on the videos often are way off. The new units apparently sync with your phone. This will be really helpful. Being able to play the videos back on my iPad or iPhone also will be helpful.

If anyone wants and old style Fly6, let me know. I just got the new one pre-ordered as a Christmas present from my wife.

Hm. Just noticed that the Fly6 CE has this in its product description:

The new Fly6 CE features a versatile seat post mount, with a new range of mounting options coming soon such as a Telescopic Mount which attaches to the seat rails as well as a rear pannier mount.

Sounds promising. Wonder how that pannier mount works. (I don't think I see it in DC Rainmaker's preview.)

I like the light and the company. They've always been responsive, and the Fly6 v2 I own still has very good battery life.

Even when hooked up to my computer, I have never been able to set the date and have it hold.
I would prefer to disable the date/time rather than it record with wrong. I'm afraid if the recording were ever really needed in a legal action, the opposing counsel would use the wrong date as a lever to throw out the recording even though the image itself would obvious and self explanatory.

But if you have a front camera they will correlate?
