what moderate cost rim brake 650b rims are out there?

are velocity synergy rims a good option?

what else? lots of disc specific rims out there these days, but interested in ones with a machined braking surface.

Previous gen Synergy 650b were not very good. Lots of reports of cracks at eyelets. I had a pair, but only have a front left wheel left due to the rear failing. I wasn't sure Velocity still made the Synergy, but it seems like they do.

Anecdotally, I've heard the A23 650b is a better quality rim, but I haven't ridden it yet. They can be found online for ~$60/rim

What I'm hoping to find when my current Pacenti PL23s die are either the new Pacenti Brevet or just going for a HED Belgium 650b, but I wouldn't describe the HED rims as moderate cost.

Velocity A23, Dyad, Cliffhanger, Atlas. I just built a A23 rear(OC) in 650b and very nice rim.

I noticed Velocity removed the Synergy 650b from their product page, but just found them on their store page: http://store.velocityusa.com/c/rims_touring_650b
Perhaps its leftover stock, but I'm not sure if these are improved quality from what I experienced.

Could be, I just go to their main website which lists Synergy only in 27inch...

28 and 40h only..gotta be leftover. Surprised it isn't cheaper as a closeout.

Definitely.
Was JUST looking at rims myself for a possible new bike. I have a set of 650B A23 with OC rear that have been great, even after overtensioning with too short spokes. The rear puckered slightly at the spoke holes and stayed that way after rebuild with proper length spokes. But they've not moved in ~30k miles with nary a twist of a spoke wrench (Well, maybe once.)
I like the look of these and also the Pacenti Brevet.

VO Diagonale Rim
Soma Weymouth
SunXCD Randonneuring
WEINMANN ZAC-19

I haven't built any of these up but I would be in the Velocity A23/Cliffhanger, HED belgium+, Pacenti Brevet camp for tubeless compatibility.

The Zac-19 is schrader valve only as far as I can see.

My first set of wheels on my Anderson 700C used Synergy rims. The tires never set up straight, always some hard to resolve wobble. Then someone here linked to a post on Jan Heine's blog about rims with too deep wells (Mounting Tires on Rims With Deep Wells) that specifically mentions the Synergy rims as having too deep of a well. I bit the bullet and had the wheels rebuilt with Boyd Altamont Lites and the tire seating wobbles were history.
