The Fat Tire Flyer was the first magazine for mountain bikers. I published it from 1980 to 1987. It was the most creative effort I was ever allowed to make, because no one could limit what was in it. I wrote for other magazines, but they all had editors who had to approve my work, so I had to meet their standards.

My efforts were rewarded this year when I was contacted by a design magazine about doing an article celebrating the design of the Fat Tire Flyer. The theme of the issue was "disruption," which was a good way to describe the Fat Tire Flyer.

I wrote the article, and then forgot about it until the check arrived. If I had known how beautifully it would come out, I might have put more effort into it and asked for more money. It's a design magazine. Beautiful is what they do.

My article is now available both online and in print. The online version is here (https://issuu.com/mohawkpaper/docs/moh_mmq13_forissuu) (starts on page 50).

This page (https://thepaperchronicles.com/disrupting-norms-with-mohawk-maker-quarterly/) explains the article, and includes this flattering quote from the editor:

"I am so glad to see I am not the only one who misses zines! This gem is Fat Tire Flyer by Charlie Kelly and looks back on the introduction of the mountain bike and how it changed the bicycle industry. However, I’ve never seen a zine printed with three types of paper — most were of the xeroxed and stapled variety!"

Buried on the page is a link to get a free copy, if you will pay for the shipping. In my case that amount was $16 and was totally worth it. The print version is spectacular, and my article is published as a stand-alone '80s 'zine. This is an instant collector's item.

The "magazine" comes in a cardboard folder. Opened, it shows a unique artwork on the left, generated at the time of printing. On the right are the bound pages, but my article is published separately in its own booklet.

I have scanned it into a .pdf if you want to read it. (http://sonic.net/~ckelly/Seekay/ckimages/MohawkDesign.pdf)

Joe Breeze and toured the UK this summer lecturing about my book (http://boingboing.net/2014/10/27/fat-tire-flyer-repack-and-the.html). Some guys from Cranked magazine bought us enough drinks one night to keep us in one place so they could do an article. It didn't turn out to be the article they expected.
