I'm currently running Vittoria Open Pave 25mm tires on H plus Son Archetypes on my Ottrott (Campy build), but am curious about going bigger.

Has anyone out there ever put 28s on yours? My eye says there could be room.

Check the clearance between the top of the tire and brake arms, that often is the limiting factor.

I can't answer your specific question, but I've been surprised by how much variation there can be between listed and actual tire sizes depending upon the manufacturer. I recently installed a set of Micheline Pros listed as 25s onto an Easton R90SL rim. Those suckers plumped up to 29mm when mounted and just clear the EEs on my Kirk.

I can't fit any 28mm (actual width) tire. For my bike the limiting dimension is the width at the chainstays.

Michelin Pro 25 + piece of gravel (actually slag) = locked up front wheel.
This with Record brakes.
Now running Vittorias 25s with a wee bit more clearance, and I still occasionally have trouble with rocks lodging against brake arm.

Could run Michelin Pro 25s on my Ottrott, that's the fattest that will fit. No 28c tire will fit, at least on my bike, way too big. The Pro 25s are more like 26-27 and that is the limit. Dura Ace brakes.

Michelin P/R 28's no problem...front or rear..4mm clearance.

Thanks to all.

My crude measurements make me think that there's adequate clearance at the brakes but questionable at the chainstays, assuming the 28 version of these Vittorias are in fact 3mm wider in total.

Guess my next step will be hands-on experimentation.

Bumping this thread to seek some more data points. Bike is a 2005 Ottrott (f3 fork and carbon rear) with standard 58 geometry and older Campy 11 running HED aluminum wheels.

Should I order the 25s - or can I fit the 28’s?

Many thanks!

I’ve had 4 Ottrotts and don’t recall being able to fit 28s on any of them.

Like many bikes from the 2000’s, the Ottrott (and the F/S2 and F/S3 forks) was (were) designed around a 23 - 25mm tire. The Enve road fork has marginally more clearance than the Serotta forks, but with any fork, there’s more clearance with Shimano calipers than Campy calipers.

On my Ottrotts, I’ve been able to fit the old Vittoria Pavés (27mm), but there wasn’t a lot of clearance—definitely not enough for true 28s. Specialized Turbo Cotton and Compass Cayuse Pass both come in 26mm widths. Those would be my top (clincher) choices if I’m trying to balance tire width and safe clearance.

Mine is a 2003, currently with H plus Son rims and 25mm Contis. You might be able to fit 28mm tires but it would be too tight at the chainstays in my opinion.

25s on here. It's probably the largest size that I'd be comfortable with.

I guess it depends on how it was spec'd out. My frame clears 32mm but the F3 fork and brake bridges are 28mm max.

I only run 25s on my Ottrott
Every 28 I’ve used on my SV
With great success wouldn’t budge
Fore or aft on my Ottrott...

Thanks for all of your new replies - sounds like 25's it is!
