Are presta valves a no-no?

Is there some sort of gasket needed?

around your local lbs. They are rare, but you may be able to find presta valve threaded washers with a shoulder built onto them that will fit nicely into the schraeder hole providing a nice clean fit.

Or, you may also be able to find a schraeder valve threaded washer which has a shoulder on it to fit into the hole. Carefully, ever so carefully, you may than be able to run your presta valve up through the schraeder washer and tighten it down with your presta washer. This looks clunky, but it does keep your valve nicely aligned.

You may also need to ream out the threads on the schraeder washer to permit the presta valve to go through. If you're going to go to this effort, you might also wish to shave down the thickness of the schraeder washer so that the whole package doesn't look too clunky...

Or, you could just lay out the cash for a nice new set of wheels!

Don't know why I didn't simply do some Googling:

bike nashbar use to sell a presta adaptor to fit into a shrader drilled rim. like $1.50. if they no longer carry you might try airbomb. they seem to carry a complete line of problem solver parts.

Any good bike shop can order either rubber grommet adapters to do the job or adapters that look like little silver top hats with a hole through the top. Insert the adapter through the rim from the spoke side.

a 1/4" (I think) rubber grommet. You should be able to find them in the electrical area at a home improvement store. Pop it into the shraeder hole in the inner wall of the rim and you should be good to go.
