Because no one else will pick him, I'll go with the long shot but personal sentimental favorite and that's Zabel. He's always good late in the season. The course is supposed to be too selective, but maybe he can gut it out and surprise them all in the end.

Vino will go too early and Valverde too late.

. . . my personal pick, and that's Bettini. If the Cricket can jump a couple of K's from the line and make it stick I would be so happy for him--assuming he then passes the doping control.

I would also be deliriously happy if Zabel could pull it out for a farewell performance, but I don't think that's going to happen. Oh, well . . . I can dream, can't I? ;)

If it comes down to a sprint I have to pick Big Tom, since as far as I know Friere and McKewen are out. Or is McKewen in? Can't remember . . .

Some dumb arse celebrity when aked who would win the championship bout between Ali and Frazier replied "the black guy".

The guy on drugs is going to win.

I'm beginning to not care at all about the guy in the jersey, I just watch the colors go whizzing by. Somebody wearing blue will win.

Zabel, as others have said, is a sentimental favorite. Plus he was flying in the Vuelta, and has a history of being in the finale on selective (hilly) courses.

But another German to watch is Stefan Schumacher (sorry Hincapie fans). 25 years old, 7th in Pro Tour standings (per 9/25 Velonews) after winning a hilly Tour of Poland.

If these two are together in a late break, look out azzuri!

azzuri?

the italians won't do anything other than pimp it, argue, and have nothing to show for it in spite of bribing 20% of the field to work for them.
