Q: What bar-end shifter and RD can I use?

Looking to run a bar-end friction shifter for my 1x11 setup. Cassette is 11–42. What rear derailleur and bar end shifter will work?

You'll want 7800 shifters since those were the last that could be put into friction mode.

Editing out my derailleur suggestions because I thought 11-40 not 42.

You can use SRAM S-500 (https://www.sram.com/sram/road/products/sram-s-500-aero-shifter#sm.0001go5uiera7f3ctch2fh67iidmp) 11s bar end and any clutch RD with Exact Actuation. X9 for instance.

Edit: I take that back. I'm not sure the X9 will handle a 42t. Pretty sure Force 1 will, though.

Didn't see that requirement. That sounds like a headache. I fail to see a good reason for friction on 1x11 11-42.

I love friction shifting, but I've never had any luck beyond 8V. More cogs require time spent with poor shifting to get the correct lever positions committed to muscle memory. It's certainly doable, but I've never had the patience.

To add to an earlier post: I am fairly sure that 7700 was the end of the friction bar-end. I've owned both 7700- and 7800-series bar-ends. The latter did not have the option to shift friction in the rear.

Well a 11s barend and rear der, matched via manufacturer... Campag->Campag, Shimano->shimano, any will work fine, even short cage rear der since it’s a 1by....

What brand derailleur are you running? That will dictate the what shifter you can use.

If it's Shimano, Microshift makes an 11 speed Mega MTN bar end. Not sure about SRAM.

X9 as well as GX (X9 replacement) both handle 42 teeth no problem.

These are friction only and shifting a Campy 10sp cassette. I think that it as easy to shift as any of my 5-7sp friction setups.

I would think that the larger barrel is mostly responsible for that. As far as I know there are no bar end pods produced that allow the use of shifters with larger than standard barrels. Dia Compe currently produces a DT shifter (http://www.diacompe.com.tw/product/ene-11s-shifter/) with 11s in mind.

10 or 11 speed friction is no hassle once you put 20 miles on the setup and get used to the spacing.

Almost any decent friction shifter will work fine with 11 speed. Early 7800 BS78's were both friction and indexed 10 speed; later 7850's and 7900's are index only. But 8 or 9 speed Shimao or DA bar ends or DT shifters are both friction and indexed and will be perfectly happy running across an eleven speed cassette in friction mode.
