I did not find a dedicated Veteran's Day thread for this year, but this one is close enough.

I just stumbled upon and watched a short but very interesting feature on PBS about the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) "US Army Caisson Platoon". I had never heard of this unit before. It is based in Fort Myer, VA, and provides the horses and riders that "pull the caisson (the wagon that bears a casket) in military and state funerals", at Arlington National Cemetery.

The main subject of the feature, a veteran of many years, emphasized the precision and dignity behind the preparations for these final passages. He says, "It doesn't matter if you're Private Johnson or President Kennedy...we treat every funeral the same way. The standard is the standard, every time that they go out."

I found the entire story very beautiful and extremely moving.

The Old Guard also provides the Honor Guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns.

I looked for you: it is the "Service" episode of PBS' "Craft in America" series.

The "Caisson Platoon" portion is quite short, and starts at 44:36. Despite the brevity, I really found it very meaningful, and will look to see if there is more on this unit and the work they do.

I was married at Ft Myer in the Old Post Chapel. The Old Guard has a wedding carriage that picked up my bride and I as we left the chapel. I was a naval officer back then and was never so pleased with the Army as I was that day! My wife still talks about how that beautiful carriage ride made her feel like a princess ...
