I had a thought in me to ride out to my wife's families place in Plainview for Thanksgiving (from North Jersey). I can obviously get into the city, but from there I'm not sure the best, safest way to make it not only to LI, but to further get out to Plainview.

Any idea? Or is it just not worth the hassle..? Ride with GPS has me taking Hillside Ave, which I'm unfamiliar with, but looks less than ideal.

I'd go to Coney Island from Manhattan, say, and then follow the coast along the Rockaways. Then, I'd go out to Long Beach, go up Long Beach Rd and take a route from there, avoiding the main roads.

Generally, the Strava heatmap roads are the ones you are going to want to follow.

Do you have access to Strava heat map? If not I can plot route for you. I've ridden home from Manhattan before, it's not bad at all. Plainview should be easy, near LIE

Use the 59th street bridge get into Queens. Queens Blvd is not that bad for cycling these days. There are new bike lanes. Once in the Forest Hills area, find your way to Jewel Avenue and then ride East on it until you can get to the service road next to the 495. That service road has little traffic and is a pretty safe and pleasant ride. That will get you to Plainview.

Make sure your front and rear lights are fully charged.

I would take the 59th Street Bridge into Queens, then hop on Skillman Ave. and snake your way around to 34th Ave. Follow that all the way to Flushing Meadow Park, cut through the park and pop out the other side onto Horace Harding. From there it's a straight shot all the way out to LI and Plainview.

We went more north. A little slow through the side streets, but riding along the water was nice. The pace picked up at that point with fewer stops.

This route is good from Forest Hills: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/23117441.

Jewel Avenue, despite bike lanes, has fast traffic as you cross Flushing Meadows Park, so be careful. I prefer 83rd Ave/Hoover south of the park.

At mile 23.9, bear right on Syosset-Woodbury Rd, then right on South Woods Rd/Piquet Ln, right on Woodbury Rd, left on Manetto Hill Rd, right on Central Park Rd.

find a way to the cross island parkway (theres a bike path on it), then when you hit the LIE exit, hop on the service road and that will take you straight to plainview.
