As my "year without lycra" is coming to an end I've decided that I better look for something a little warmer than shorts now that it's getting cold here in New York.

I know there was a thread somewhere (I can't find it) but does anyone have suggestions for inexpensive "non-cycling" pants that are good for cycling? I'm good with jeans for my commute, but my dork meter is taking a hit on the long rides.

The cheaper the better. The experiment has been partially about frugality.

These aren't cheap (to me anyways) but DU/ER makes amazing stuff. I was wooed by the style, but they are comfy like sweatpants and look great off the bike. I have two pairs of jeans, but they make others that are a little more office-appropriate (thought I wear mine at work).

They fit big (is that correct? I bought a size smaller than normal and they are super comfy) - just an FYI if you were to buy them online. If you wear 34" --> buy a 32"

Cadence Collection makes something like this. Mission Workshop would be my reco but they are far from cheap.

I've recently picked up a pair of work trousers from The Academy (https://www.theacademylb.com/). They're pretty stretchy and pretty lightweight. I've used them to commute to work, where I have a locker with shirts. They go pretty seamlessly between commuting and office work. MUSA in Compton! and if you buy them in store, they go for $68! I got a great deal on their previous iteration at $58. As a cyclist, the owner is pretty open to feedback and other accessories that they can custom make.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I'm actually good with my "non-technical" jeans for riding. I'm really looking for something more like a sport / soccer pant I suppose

I'm familiar with running specific gear, but most of it is lighter-weight, with not so great abrasion resistance.

I've been using cold weather Dainese motorcycle pants for my winter rides in and about town or Pearl Izumi Elite Amfib bibtights for tempo rides. Both work into single digit temps.

I use Under Armour heavyweight running pants for commuting. Trim fit but not skin tight.

If you want pants that look more like trousers take a look at Outlier clothing.

Any technical outdoor pants with small percentage of spandex should do. Patagonia, Prana, REI and EMS house brands, Kuhl, Arcteryx, etc...

How about some $5 wool dress pants from Goodwill that are hemmed to make knickers?

Or splurge on some Dickies and do the same.

Both of these have been my go-to cold weather riding ‘round town.

I had started a somewhat related thread and the popular response was the Sporthill Super XC pant. Possibly that is the one you are looking for?

I'm a huge fan of Uniqlo sweatpants. Gussetted crotch, zipped pockets, quick dry material, and room for larger butt/legs. $20 on sale. I've been using them as my commuting pants all year - love 'em.

If you can find some skinny dickies jeans, I found they're great for cycling.
They're nicely tapered (for my skinny lanky legs), cheap, wind/grime proof and super resilient.

Sport hill full stop. They have been my commuter/cross-country skiing pants for 20 years. Nice combinations of spandex/ polypropylene that move and keep you warm when wet. One really old pair has some wool also, but they dropped that. I did run into the owner of the company,Jim Hill, while skiing 3 years ago. He recognized the pants and was amazed I was still using them. He didn't notice all the mending I had done on them .
They make well thought out clothing that lasts forever.

I browse around our version of REI and look for pants with some stretch built into the fabric. Have about 3 pairs now that I caught on sale or clearance.
Have a couple pairs of Levi's 511 commuter jeans that are really nice for riding. Got 25% off for them.
Recently came across these cotton pants with some lycra that have good stretch in both the legs AND the waist. Usually don't see any in the waist. These were on sale for $30 at the time so I got a bunch for work.

Think I'm good for a while with all these.

If you are looking more for a pant as Veloo brought up another option is Vans. They have some stretch chinos etc probably similar to the Levis.

I have never tried these non-cycling pants. From last few months have been using tank top and mesh cut out leggings (https://www.carbon38.com/shop-all-activewear/bottoms/mesh-leggings) as my yoga pants. These tights are good in quality and give me full comfort. Will recommend my mom too as she do yoga everyday, she will love them for sure.

Thanks all.

I do believe the SportHill would work out well. But there was a brand that came up that was available I *think* from Wiggle that a bunch of people brought up.

Curious if this rings a bell with anyone before I take the SportHill plunge.

I'm late to the game but Ben Davis-hemmed and tapered.

Ben Davis are double seamed at the taper so its a little more expensive but theyre so tough its hard to bust through them
