View Full Version : What black crank with Shimano 11 speed on a retro frame?

Going back to 11 speed Shimano on my MX Leader.

Thinking of trying a different crank for aesthetics, as the main improvement trying Campy provided was having a crank that visually matched the frame better. Didn't really care for the shifting mechanics or lever/hood shape.

I'll be using some combination of 9000/6800/5800, but want to try a non-group black crank. What are some options?

Will need to work with 11 speed and an Italian bottom bracket. I prefer a (mid-)compact, but really would be okay with any chainring combination.

Pick any crank and get it powder coated black. Probably $40.

Or WI VBC.

those praxis/turn cranks looks pretty nice on most bikes

That was my first thought, but it seems they support everything except Italian threaded BBs.

White Ind. VBC would look cool! Black arms of course.

Why not keep the campy crank?

fwiw, you can just use campy cranks. the later iterations of the 5 arms styles had darker anno rings that looked real nice and didn't have that 2 tone thing going on.

this is the last looker from Shimano:

This is my vote, provided the compatibility is in order.

I'm sure the Campy cranks would work fine, but I'm not keen on mixing Campy/Shimano/SRAM.

Yeah, I can dig that. They apparently made a compact (6650) also.

If there were some more traditional looking chainrings for the 6800/5800 cranks, I would be interested in those.

If you must go Shimano, try the 105 5750. But it's ugly compared to that SRAM chainset.

SRAM, Praxis, or WI VBC.

honestly, i think the new sram red is the best looker of the new crop of space-aged cranksets. but if you're averse to mixing, take a look at the 6750 also. otherwise i'd go with the praxis

You just need downtube shifters and your preferred lever choice.

My suggestions would be for either one of these two and the latter is only $29.51 shipped via eBay.

I’m planning an all black component build on an older steel frame as well and I think I’ll be going with black White Industries VBC. Best looking modern, non Hollowgram crankset to my eyes.

I bought a silver ultra torque crank for my Serotta that was all 5800. Looked great and worked perfectly.

From another thread:

1) IRD Lobo cranks with versatile chainring sized like a WI VBC. And similarly, comes in black and silver:

https://sep.yimg.com/ay/ird/lobo-adventure-crankset-3.gif

2) Dimension 110, square taper, and you can select your own rings. This is good for those who don't want to be tied into a manufacture's ring ecosystem. Could even go with Rotor 46-30 elliptical rings, if desired.

Again - not going to run a Campy or SRAM crank with a Shimano shift group.

The IRD isn't bad, but they don't sell a 50t or larger big ring with it.

The Sugino XD looks pretty nice:

When it comes down to it, though - most of this stuff is either uglier than the 6800/5800 cranks or much more expensive. So I'll probably just stick with what I've got at this point.

Nifty! I wish they made them longer than 170's.

I know you wanted non group parts, but black 5800 cranks is the simple answer since they are black and not dark gray like the 6800 or 9000. I also happen to have a set in really good condition that I will never use (175, 50/34) for $65 shipped if you want them. I can pay for a difference if you want to get rid of your 6800 cranks and they are 172.5 or shorter! :)

I'm leaning towards going full 5800 for this bike, because why not. I have a bike with a 9000/6800 blend, and another coming with full 6800. I used 5800 on the CAAD I briefly owned this summer, and the only things noticeable were weight and a slightly different lever feel.

Unfortunately I do need 172.5 cranks so I can't take you up on that offer.

I put a Ritchey crankset on my old Waterford w a new 105 group. Looked retro; worked modern.

:-D

But you're going to use one of those four arm monstrosities with an elegant steel frameset?!

Campag, fair enough, it is clearly Campag. The SRAM chainset could be anything as soon as you black out the logos.

At least give the Praxis (with some different rings) a go, the frame deserves it.

I like the Praxis. But there's no Italian BB option.
