My 77yr old Dad just told me that he wants to get a trike, as he is no longer comfortable riding a two wheeler. Why the hell not?!?? Better that than sitting around watching American Pickers.

Anyhoo, I look on my local buy+sell and lo and behold, this gem shows up. Read the description and do your best to visualize this thing being used as it should. :)

It made me laugh and would be a bit ironic as a new bike for my Dad :)

Ha!

After that, if he wants to try a tadpole layout you guys could build one like this:

Then, if he wants to do some touring:

Check out this You Tube of a local trike club. Crusty old Farts....or something like that. A group of about 30 of them rides near my home....some of those carbon fiber bikes are $10,000 and up. Bents are gaining a lot of following...2 and 3 wheel versions.

keep turning those pedals as long as he can. there are some pretty cool trikes out there too. whatever keeps you out there, and the heart pumping is a good thing!

I've loved the British racing trikes since I first saw them in the mid 1970's. I've secretly wanted to own one just for the novelty.

Yeah, it wouldn't look good :).

My Dad cant do recumbents I think - too low to the ground. He is perfectly content riding an old man trike. I thought there'd be several on my local buy/sell, but only the one with the awesome liquor box thus far. I think I will pass ...

Those off road trikes with fat and mid-fat tires looked kinda fun.

I met an older guy in Silicon Valley riding something similar. I was at a restaurant, and he had ridden there also for lunch. I had to help him up as he couldn't get out of the low slung set up. I felt a bit bad for him as he was a bit embarrassed, but I gave him some serious kudos for being out and about whereas I drove.

I almost had ANT Bike Mike build a custom bike with a front axle that had two wheels and disc brakes, but was more upright than a tadpole style recumbent. More like a cross between a Townie and recumbent tricycle with three wheel disc brakes. I like that design because it's harder to flip and the gearing can be wider.

I wonder about how stable these things are when turning? They look tippy, especially for an inexperienced 77 year old. I guess if you are just cruising at 10km/hr max, you cant do that much damage (I hope?)

Like this? Though this one has two forks.

Well, somewhat, but not exactly. If you picture the Cat Trike style front axle, with a flat bar and Townie style semi recumbent in the rear, that's what I was trying to describe. It would probably have used 24 inch front wheels and 26 inch rear wheel.

This would allow a front mounted basket between the front wheels as well as a rear rack and even rear panniers.

Given the narrow track width of the front wheels, isn't this trike easy to tip over? Especially on uneven terrain?

There are 3 wheeled motor scooters in a similar configuration, but the front wheels are on pivoting axles, allowing the scooter to be leaned like a 2 wheel scooter:
