View Full Version : Help me find some gaudy cycling kit

Let me start this post by saying that I ride in the dark a lot and I've stopped wearing black kit entirely. It's silly to throw away that much surface area worth of visibility.

Also, it is my opinion that if it's worth doing, it's worth doing ridiculously. When I ride in the daylight, I prefer some bright colors and bold patterns.

With that in mind, help me find the best (worst?) looking, neon colored, possibly block printed, 90s inspired kit. Secondary criteria is finding kit I'd actually like to put some serious miles on. Let's keep this limited to something we can purchase new and isn't just some knockoff company doing old Mapei jerseys.

The best looking kit I've seen so far is Team Dream x Endo customs (https://teamdreambicyclingteam.com/collections/cycling-apparel).

What else is out there?

I think you hit the nail on the head with the "surface area" comment. The whole garment in white during the day and reflective at night is optimal. I found this white jacket that is reflective white at night. It's pricey at $175, but we're worth it. You could just wear a base layer underneath if it is still warm were you are.
https://www.provizsports.com/en-us/reflect360-plus-mens-cycling-jacket.html?___store=en_us&nosto=productcategory-nosto-mostpopular-fallback-nosto-1

There are some jerseys with reflective stripes. I'm personally not a fan of them because as you say, they don't utilize much surface area and what does a driver see when they are behind you? Vauge stripes. If you like them, I found this one and it's only $44.90 on sale.
https://www.aerotechdesigns.com/reflective-cycling-jersey-for-visibility-and-safety.html

If you don't care about reflectivity and just want loud, this jersey's whole surface area is colored in fluorescent orange and yellow die. It's club fit (I hate club fit!) but doesn't look all Liberace, not that there's anything wrong with that. They are $59.95 and IMO don't look too bad.

Let me be the first to applaud your good sense! "Silly", you say, to camouflage oneself in traffic? That doesn't even begin to describe it.

Hi-viz is useless at night or in low light. Movement is what the eye detects. Unfortunately we don't move our arms much while we ride.

OP, I'd skip the gaudy or bright and go for blocky. POC put out some interesting stuff on this when they first launched their road line.

I believe that's made by Voler -- my wife got a pair of those shorts for me a while back on the "sale" part of the Voler site.

Check out Pactimo. All of their jerseys have bright color options and their Artist's series have some pretty outrageous designs.

Yes, but not for XXL's, unfortunately.

Stien, I'd spend on lights, too. I think those are more important than blingy kit, although that's more fun to buy.

https://www.bicycling.com/bikes-gear/night-riding/the-science-of-being-seen-a-guide-to-safer-riding/slide/5

A 2004 meta-review of studies found drivers consistently recognized fluorescent colors faster, more consistently and from farther way than standard colors. Fluorescent material reflects non-visible ultraviolet light back in the visible spectrum, making it look about 200 percent brighter in daylight than conventional colors.

There’s no research on which color creates the best contrast, but flourescent orange is a good pick because it’s commonly used on highway safety and construction signs (ie. drivers associate it with caution), and orange is rare in the natural environment.

Keep in mind that fluorescents simply don’t work at night, when there’s no natural sun for the fabric to reflect. Artificial light sources like car headlights and street lamps don’t emit UV light either. At night your fluorescent yellow jacket is no brighter than anything else in your closet.

Well, maybe not quite:

Why Lime-Yellow Fire Trucks Are Safer Than Red (http://www.apa.org/action/resources/research-in-action/lime.aspx)

Picture a fire truck and you are likely to see red — fire engine red. But when it comes to safety, human factors and ergonomics research paints a different picture. Much of what we know about human factors and ergonomics relies upon psychological studies of human visual and auditory perception. This research shows that because the color-transmitting cones in our eyes don't work well in the dark, some colors are easier for us to see at night. We are most sensitive to greenish-yellow colors under dim conditions, making lime shades easiest to see in low lighting. A 2009 study by the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), a division of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), also concluded that fluorescent colors, including yellow-green and orange, are easiest to spot in daylight.

If you like their stuff, I suggest using the chat tool to check sizing with customer service. The sizes they suggested for me were perfect and would not have been my choices just using the sizing table.

I'll echo the statements that say to focus on moving parts. I've taken to wearing obnoxiously bright shoes, gloves, and helmets whenever possible. The reflective Giro or Rapha shoes are my go-tos.

I also do feel more visible in brightly colored kit, who knows if it makes a huge difference, but I'll risk looking like an idiot on the off chance it does work.

I have the reflective Empires and while I rarely notice them as I am not staring at my feet, they sure do light up when headlights hit them. In fact, even the sun makes them quite reflective. I find them unobtrusive and like the extra visibility. Definitely a great addition as the days get shorter.
