5800 craskset compatible with 10 speed drivetrain?

Nope no issue at all. In fact, may be a little better since CRs a wee bit closer together so less chain to fder cage rubbing at ‘extremes’.

Hmm, thanks. So would the converse be true as well - would a 5750 10-speed chainset be compatible with a 5800 or 6800 11sp drivetrain? It seems that the 5-bolt rings are a lot cheaper to replace, while still offering similar wear life.

I run this combo, works great, although IIRC not as well as an 11-sp shifter + front derailleur + crank, at least for compacts. The 100% 11 speed setup seems to have a lighter throw on the front derailleur.

I have a 6800 crankset on my other bike, with 5800 shifters + Front derailleur, that bike is a 53/39 and it's absolutely perfect with no issues with the force required to throw the front derailleur up to the big ring.

AFAICT the larger jump on the compact is more demanding.

I needed the cranks and went with the 11-speed ones to future proof, but at the time I bought/built both bikes I already owned 10-speed shimano wheels I intended to use.

Funny cause one of those bikes I put the used 10-speed wheels on and within a year the rear wheel gave up the ghost and now it has 11-speed compatible Mavic hubs on it. That bike will go full 11-speed when it needs new components, but that could take a long time.

Good info. OK I'll take it a step further - is it possible to run a left/front 5700 double shifter with a 5800/5801 front derailleur? The 5800 levers look nearly identical to the 5700 levers - it would be nice to only have to buy the rear shifter to upgrade to 11 speed.

Well, big maybe. 10s further apart than 11s so you ‘may’ get some chain to fder rub at highest or lowest gear.

Good info. OK I'll take it a step further - is it possible to run a left/front 5700 double shifter with a 5800/5801 front derailleur? The 5800 levers look nearly identical to the 5700 levers - it would be nice to only have to buy the rear shifter to upgrade to 11 speed.

No...11s shimano stuff is intercompatible, shifter/ders-wise but 10s shifters not compatible with 11s ders and vice versa.

5800 FD has the longer "ear" on it, for easier pull. So, no, 5700 and 5800 left levers aren't interchangeable..
