i know a lot has to do with the lube too.

generally, if CK R45 or DT swiss hubs are super loud, they are too dry.

DT hubs with the 54t ratchet rings installed are pretty noisy too, but if they have a good light lube, they quiet down quite a bit.

"I have a hard time getting my 240s 's to roll quiet."

If you take the freehub off and file the squared end of the pawl to a rounder softer edge it will quiet them down a little bit. your could also crush the springs so they don't push so far up. the centrifugal force will let the pawls make contact. Be aware this is the equivalent of adding miles/wear to them.

On the 240s you have to file down or round/soften the little ramps that run against each other to quiet them. the teeth on the outer circle are guides for sliding up and down in the hub, they don't generate a noise.

http://blog.fairwheelbikes.com/2012/03/08/rear-hub-noise-comparison/

That equates with my experience. I find my R45 hubs to be among the quieter of my quiver of wheels. I find my 240s hubs (with 36T and the holy racket 54T ratchets) and my WI T11's to be louder, with the T11's having a bit of a tinier sound than the 240s hubs.

From my personal experience (not much) loudest to quietest:

Hope > I9 > CK > DT240 (18t) > WI T11 > Shimano

xnetter

The Hope Mono RS rear I have is pretty loud but the tone is a little more tolerable than the CK, which sounds more nasal-y/whiny to me. The Hope has a darker mid-tone sound.

I also had a White Industries Mi5, which was nice. Somewhere between Shimano quiet and the buzzy Hopes and CKs tone zone. Clicky but not particularly loud.

Industry9 are very quite loud. Probably the loudest of the standard options from the boutique brands that I can think of....I'd also like to toss Profile Racing (https://www.profileracing.com/product-category/profile-track-road-cyclocross/road-cyclocross-hubs/) out there. Only thing I can think of off-hand that'll be louder than an I9.

Haven't had a set of project321 hubs in my hands, but I think they're very quite loud also.

Also, fwiw, the White Industries hubs get considerably louder if the high engagement ring is added to them. They go from being on the quiet side of things to being on the loud side of things.

I rebuilt my old I9 hubs into some 45mm carbon hoops for my father....that's a damned loud wheel.

None of the pawl hubs sound as good to me. Though I rode with a guy for awhile that had a set of Hadley hubs which sounded okay. I got hooked on the specific buzz of an old set of silver DT Swiss Hugi hubs that could be heard from a block away. The pawls just don’t sound the same for some reason; they’re intrusive not loud to my ear. Sort of like those mufflers people put on their exhaust instead of investing in an actual exhaust system. Each to their own!:)

Why do people like loud hubs? They're obnoxious, certainly on road bikes.

I get the need for instant engagement on an MTB and that is reality but reality is that on road bikes they're like unmuffled Harleys.

And folks who say, "just keep pedaling!" have never ridden in mountains or in groups.

My DT-Swiss are tolerable and my best ones are my Campagnolo but they're all old and worn in and have plenty of grease in the pawls.

Of my newer hubs, the Wheels Mfg. are the nicest sounding. Very muted but mechanical and precise sound. WI are next.

I work around abrasive, screeching noise in my day job. I don't like noise for the sake of noise in my free time. CK hubs are noisy.

That's my $.02 and I'm sticking to it. Now get off my lawn while you're at it.

The lightweight rear disc is one of the loudest wheels I've ever encountered, but that's because the whole damn thing is acting like a speaker for the DT hub hiding in there.

I love loud hubs. I think it comes from being a kid and not having a bike that made noises when you didn't pedal, like the big kids did.

I'd have to agree with the consensus though: CK and DT are loud, but the I9's take the cake. it's hilarious going MTB'ing when a bunch of people are running them. you can always tell how far away your buddies are by whether or not you can hear their freehub raging.

the newer Mavics are pretty noisy too, for factory built wheels. speaking specifically of the Cosmic Pro Carbon SLC, but I know others use the same hubs.

Holy **** — don’t do this is right! DT star ratchets, when freshly and properly greased, make very little noise. Even the 54t ones. Louder if you use freehub oil. Just require frequent reapplication (and cleaning what oozes out).

I don't use grease on freewheels. On my DT 240 hubs I just smear on some Mobil 1 synthetic oil and they are not loud at all. I only have to clean and lube once a year or so but I rarely ride in the wet.

I have two sets of wheels I ride mostly. When new, they were very quiet. One a black Campagnolo Record, and the other a very similar Campagnolo Zonda. Started noticing the Record was skipping some, so took the cassette body off to get to the pawls, and the single spring that encircles the paws was broken. I maybe broke it when doing some service some months earlier. So....I ordered some springs with idea of replacing both. The new replacement Campagnolo pawl springs are thicker and studier than the original springs. I replaced both....and now....even with a liberal coating of very light grease.....they are both much louder than when new.

So noise level is not always about amount of lube....at least not on Campagnolo hubs.

Onyx hubs are awesome. Love the silent coasting. Don't think they're particularly more or less ugly than other hubs, depending on color...onyx has some doozies.

Also, FWIW, your Zipp Cognition hub in your NSW wheel sounds like grinding gears and all kinds of terrible, consider this procedure (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99MbJnqjQPs). Most of the sets of NSW wheels we've done (maybe 5 out of 6 wheelsets?) have required fairly frequent application and reapplication of their cognition oil....nose changed from a muted clicking like Zipp claims it should be, to this cacophony of grinding almost instantly at some point. One set is even off on its way back to Zipp at this moment, because it's had to be done way way too often.

^This for road and gravel bikes.

I only like noisy hubs on mountain bikes so my free hub does the talking when it is time to pass. Great when approaching riders with or without good trail etiquette.

Surprised by reports of noisy DT 240/350 hubs. I have been running at least 4 sets regularly over the past 10 years and all are very quiet only starting to make some noise when they need a re-grease after extensive use.
