nah, i'm thinking of a straight up barn on a farm. with giant barn doors on the side that opened to a (surprisingly) finished interior. more open space and cycling lounge than work shop. it was gorgeous
i don't think it was in shop thread. i think someone noticed the background in of of their cl listings and forumites wanted to see more.

Very well sorted setup there (as one would expect from the Spud). I'd not thought of a fridge, but that suddenly feels as essential as lights.

My little 8’ wide niche in the garage. Messy now, rebuilding/ bleeding 4 neglected brakes.

The garage is about 30x30 and it’s got an unfinished upstairs that I’ll convert to a bike room. Someday. It’ll have a full size fridge.

This was my situation for many, many years (until our current house, in fact). Late winter wrenching in New England with no heat isn't fun even with a space heater. Much to my wife's dismay, the bike stand often found its way into our living room. Having a usable basement has made our marriage better.

I've been camping out in a mostly-renovated room that will be an office/guest room when we can get back and finish that end of the house. At some point there will be the 'great trek' and we will finally move into the that end, and I will be displaced.

What I will do for space for bikes at that point, I don't know, since the single car unheated (though now insulated) garage is completely occupied by the carpentry stuff, and sawdust and bearings are not the best combination...

For now, I have bikes stored in the kitchen area--have a place for those, but it will require finding a home for the tools--again unheated garages in our area are not the best for things made of metal because of the humid days...

I have garage/workshop dreams a lot...

The really weird thing about that Rapha edition saddle is that the "gills" are still gold colored... at least that's what it looks like in the photos. The black/pink only saddle has pink gills.

My little workbench/niche during a recent sort & reorganize of the garage.

Still working on hanging things on the pegboard and bench.

Workstand is folded up to the lower left.

Next major thing is filling out a few more tools and hopefully getting a truing stand.

Things one can do for free or nearly free.

Parts bins with shelving rule (from a previous employer who re-organized the production floor, I got two of these and a work bench)

1697948200

Re-purposed rolling toolbox (thanks dad, RIP)

1697948201

Costco crates (this is the hazard of working next door to and having many friends at Camelbak)

1697948202

Re-purposed cheap particle board furniture from goodwill.

Here's my new one since we moved. This is the "mechanical" part of the shop, I can close the door and the dust from the wood shop stays in the wood shop. From this view, there are nice bikes to the left of me and townie bikes to the right. The ski waxing is also going to be done here. I can get the front or rear of a car in here and work on it if necessary, but I hate working on cars so hopefully that won't happen too often. You can see the edge of "Big Red" the tool box on the right. The benchtop is 3 layers of 3/4 ply glued and screwed, to support the Wilton on the end, lots more stickers have appeared since this picture was taken.

Fully cleaned up and ready for getting back to work.

Shop computer needs some love as do a couple of the drawers but I’m otherwise happy with it. Still need some tools to round out my collections of bike and general automotive tools and would love a decent truing stand since I want to start building my own wheels.

I use this to maintain two cars, 6 bikes and a house.

I have two serious problems with my workshop:

1. I have the terrible habit of finishing a job and walking away and/or starting the next one before I clean up and put my tools away. End result: every flat surface is covered and I have to spend hours cleaning up before I’m able to do anything.
2. Bikes generate a huge number of small parts ranging from the tiny (brake pads) to the large (cranks, wheels, forks, ...) I’ve tried mightily to organize everything well enough so I don’t end up with a big box labeled “misc” but still have a ton of crap lying around that I can’t or haven’t organized.

I’ll take a picture once I’ve spent the requisite several hours cleaning it up enough that I’m not embarrassed ;-)

My little area of solace carved out the garage. We just moved a few months ago and I had a clean slate since there was nothing in the garage except a utility sink (huge bonus). Added a fridge and built all the 2x4 shelves and workbench/bike area. Just finished up the modified bike/wheel hanging system to get the bikes off the floor. Going to get it setup for winter training by adding a TV and old computer for the trainer. Pretty satisfied with the space so far...

personally, i think it's a whole lot more impressive to learn and see how someone manage and organize their workshop in a limited space. For a good part of my biking life, that's what i had to deal with, the constraints. But that changed 3-4 years when we moved into this house. the house itself is not a whole lot bigger but the genius of it all is the inner "third" sanctum attached to what looks like a normal 2-car garage from the outside. i think it's meant for someone to park his sporty ferrari or antique car but instead i turn it into my biking haven. i like to tell the funny story of how our agent brought us to see the house and being a smart lady that she is, she made us go through the garage first. when i saw what i saw, i immediately declared to my wife and the agent, "i don't need to look at the rest of the house. this is it. tell me where to sign."

pardon me for the size of the photo. i have to take advantage of the panaromic feature of my new iphone in order to accurately portray the size of it. because of the extra dedicated space, i leave it pretty much in perpetual mess and could get away with it. that's why i said earlier, it's more impressive to watch someone maximize and optimize a smaller workspace than it is to see someone who is just simply spoiled and privileged...like moi.

Uh, how do you guys keep your floors looking so clean? And some of these are in regular rooms in houses, even! Every time I clean my chain I get grease and citrus degreaser all over the floor of my shed. I spread old newspapers underneath my workstand, but I still do a number on the floor itself.

How can anyone do mechanical work involving lubrication without making a mess of the floor? What's wrong with me?

I put an extra shop towel or old T shirt on the floor under the bike, do the messy work and use the towel to clean up whatever else gets on the floor. Not much issue after that.

He loooooved chewing on a campy lever (broken one at least), the plastic hood makes a great dog toy.

and yes that is a camera but wife has no access to it :)

What is the red peg board system you've got there? I may need to look into that.

That’s just the standard white pegboard from HD cut down to size and then I sprayed the whole thing red. Wanted to add some color and it’s easier on the eyes than the expanse of white.

thanks everyone and I should say,

thank you Evan (donevwil) for the awesome Eddy calendar. He sent it to me early this year while I still live in Brooklyn, knowing that eventually would have a place in my shop and it is probably one of my favorite things I have hanging on the wall.

My new doggo name is Stacks. We adopted him from the local humane society. He is 2 and is amazing. We lost our dog Gus this summer, he was the best. We missed having a dog so much that we broke our rule of, we are going to wait a year. Got Stacks (Short Stacks is his full name) and he has been a great guy.

Very well sorted setup there (as one would expect from the Spud). I'd not thought of a fridge, but that suddenly feels as essential as lights.

And windows...overlooking a deck!

I'm happy to have a dedicated room in the basement, with heat, power, lights and a door to close. Previous owner of the house lined the entire shop with pegboard...we moved in two years ago, I'm just now sorting out how I really want it arranged...and how bikes can share a space with woodworking equipment...

I have two serious problems with my workshop:

1. I have the terrible habit of finishing a job and walking away and/or starting the next one before I clean up and put my tools away.

Those of us with ADD don't have that problem...we never finish a job (according to my wife!).

But seriously...professionals define "cleaning and putting away tools" as part of the job, versus a separate task...

Looking at this again...is your workshop on the second floor, with the window looks down into that tree? Maybe an upper bedroom converted? If so, how do you get bicycles, etc. up there? The stairs are wide and comfortable enough?

Also, for some reason I really like those Elephant NFEs. The color is so perfect; I always loved the old USFS Internationals that were that color....talk about patina! And the photo in the "Snow" thread is nice too. Never seen one irl, though, let alone ridden one.

Yeah, that's messy, but nothing like mine. I really desperately need to do some cleanup. Just retrieved some fork blades to list them on ebay and made it much, much worse. But I recently realized that a lot of my bike work should be done in the basement, so that's going to make things better. Maybe worse for the basement though.

I have at least divided my workshop into two parts, "clean" and "dirty or smelly", with a closing door between them.

I use the crawl space (under the garage) with it's irregular floor contour for the dirty parts of my work. Here I can fire up the bench grinder, use aerosol sprays, heat things with the torch and file away at metal while my clean shop doesn't see/feel/smell any of the dust, fumes or smoke. It has lighting, is cross-ventilated to the outdoors, and has a home-spun "Gunnite" sort of floor surface that is conducive to frequent sweeping. The dirt floor no longer crumbles since I doused it with acrylic-fortified liquid Portland cement! Also there is much storage space in there, just ten feet from the clean workshop space and low-ceiling "museum" room where my two-wheeled vintage arsenal resides.

My "clean" workshop is disorganized to the point where I won't show it, I build/repair quite a few wheels in there and keep most-used repair bits scattered about. Good lighting is the main focus, plus there is a refrigerator, but I have to use an adjacent laundry room for tasks requiring running water.

Formerly-unused basement space is a very good thing when a house has no drainage or moisture problems. The "wet" look of the cement "flooring" is actually the acrylic fortifier, not moisture!

The maroon filing cabinet came from a buddy who acquired it while stationed on Quantico. The white cabinets came from a buddy who was upgrading his customer's kitchen.

The space to the right of the white cabinets is pending me making a framework for another pair of glass doors. The space is wider than the doors, so I gotta make something. ...that and the cabinet the doors came off of disintegrated due to wet

edited to add: I got the plywood behind the white cabinets from the same buddy that gave me the filing cabinet. It's ONE INCH thick plywood. Can you say 'massive overkill?!' Just finished mine! I looked at lots of examples from here and the Salon to get ideas … pleased with how it came out. Outside shed, so no A/C in the summer months makes it tough; but a space heater for the winter should make it tolerable. It’s small enough space that I have to put the repair stand outside of the shed when working on a bike (so it’s a strictly fair weather operation).

Update - I decided to add the vintage Campagnolo tools onto the board. Although it’s not often I use the old Campagnolo tools (bought them in my mid teens 45 years ago!), I felt they deserved a place of prominence/honor on the tool wall rather than in the tool chest!

Speaking of vintage, note too the large tub of Campy grease, which is probably from that same era; it’s almost 3/4 full still.

How are the tools clinging to your truing stand? Is everything in your shop magnetized?

since this thread popped back up onto the 1st page and I'm just now seeing this post AND assuming that question was for me (and I haven't already answered) the answer is yes.

Got some rare earth magnets from a hobby shop next to one of the shops I used to work for and attached them and the spoke wrenches to the truing stand.

I always know where my spoke wrenches are since they're right on the truing stand

The new to me van I'm kitting out as a mobile workshop has 6 x 18" magnets waiting to go onto the wall. 1st step tho is to figure out how to cut a hunk of HDPE to match the curvature of the van's opposite wall for a workstand.

M

edited to add: there's newer stuff on the board, but since I come home, work on something for a few min, then have to do something else, I'm pretty type B on this bench. Work? Different story. There everything's clean and put away since a. customers see the work area (van or shop), and b. that's how I make my living.

I'm always trying to put things I always use front and center where I can reach tools easily. Things I don't use often are on the outer edges and higher or lower than 'right in front of me.' So folding wrench sets are right where I can grab them, etc

If the basis for a bike room is that it’s badass, I have a leg up today - I set two rat traps for my furry friends that are starting to piss me off. I have a bunch of bike stuff, some ****ty old tools and an OG trainer (aka no computer , screen, etc) sitting on gravel to pedal away winter km.

Truth be told, I would love a nice, clean, well lit, rodent free space with a really awesome stationary bike setup to do this - I cannot deny this!

Still working on it but a vast improvement from before. Definitely much easier to work on bikes when I don’t have to hunt for my tools. I was worried that I built the pegboard too big. Then I hung my tools and have no regrets.

Trying to decide if I want to make a modular setup on my bench top so I can swap out the vise for my truing stand. Leaning towards just mounting the vise and securing the stand in it when I need to use it.

nah, i'm thinking of a straight up barn on a farm. with giant barn doors on the side that opened to a (surprisingly) finished interior.
I have a pole barn at my new place, but it's not yet organized, and it's definitely doesn't now, and never will, "opened to a (surprisingly) finished interior."

I'm still getting settled into and working on the new house, getting a lot of stuff fixed, etc. Electrical, plumbing, gutters, etc. While nothing is complete, several things are converging to completion.

In my opinion an unfinished basement is a wonderful thing. Unfortunately, an unfinished basement is also a place where hoarded and useless stuff can remain for decades. It's a perilous balance. When I lived in an apartment no such thing would ever happen. In various ways, those were better days.

Timely bump on this thread. Our family recently moved and one of the benefits of doing so was I got my own space for a dedicated bike workshop. This is still a work in progress -- I've got a few more things planned for it -- but otherwise it's been fun to finally feel like I've got some space to move around in. Oh and also I now have a fully stocked Red Bull fridge, which is nice. ;)

For those who may be wondering, the hanging/sliding storage rack was a DIY project I recently completed using strut channel conduit rails with 4-bearing trolleys. Turned out really well. The hooks slide along the rail on the trolleys which allows me to cram everything up there comfortably and with room to spare. If anyone would like me to do a separate how-to thread I'd be happy to put something together. Total all in cost was ~$150 (probably cheaper if you exclude all the extra parts I bought but didn't ultimately use!).

Thanks! Yeah the DIY trolley system works fantastic --- the low cost to build it only adds to my enthusiasm with how it turned out. I don't work industry, but came up with the idea after a lot of researching/googling about what I had envisioned.

There are some youtube videos out there with DIY sliding storage setups that are similar in principle, but they all seem to use barn door sliding trolleys instead, and I'm not sure how standardized the parts all are -- and they also seemed to be more expensive.

I went with the unistrut/strut channel setup instead because its cheaper, it's ubiquitous, the dimensions and parts are standardized, and there are sooo many different trolley designs/options out there to choose from -- aka it shouldn't ever be a problem to source replacement parts or test new designs in the future. For example, the way I have mine set up utilizes two different trolley designs that allow me to mount either complete bicycles or framesets, as can be seen in the photos.

I did something similar with a trolley system to store a rotomolded kayak under my deck. Two web slings hold the kayak and I can slide it out for access, or slide it in for storage.

Of course, the good kayaks are stored via pulley systems in the garage. But that's a different thread :)

New house, new bike room.

Basement room, lots of space and high ceilings. Also not too far from the furnace and is currently at 70 degrees which is a bit warm for my liking on the trainer at least.

Still need to:
- Hang/Tape/Finish drywall.
- Build out a wall/door to make an actual large storage closet past the main pane.
- Maybe install drop ceiling to keep the HVAC duct work and plumbing accessible while also keeping all that heat out of the room.
- Route a few HDMI's through the wall so they are hidden from the workbench/charging station to the double TV setup.
- Build out a few shelves in the shallow closet for other tools/for sale items.

As far as a work stand goes. I swiped a Feedback Sports slide, lock, clamp head on eBay for the cheap and will be installing my own small section of 1-1/2" Pipe on the wall somewhere, hoping it can swing away or down when not in use.

Small update, still toying with placement of bikes and the work stand before I add some soundproofing insulation and drywall so I can add blocking between studs to keep things as secure and compact as possible.

Feedback work stand clamp (used) and a exterior antenna mount from amazon looks to be a nice compact option and under $75.

Overall, I want to try to keep that hallway area as clear as possible and I will eventually putting a wall/door there for permanent storage.

My garage is too full of bikes (and other stuff) to work in, so I turned a section of my home office closet into bike tool and parts storage. I can put a bike up on my stand and work on it during boring Teams meetings.

It isn't much, but it's so much better than anything I've had before,

What an awesome thread……..I need one of those base units with the wood top and also the Red Bull fridge!!
My workspace is way too cluttered at this time to post. I’m a bit ashamed, lol.
