i have been fortunate to have owned two poodles. one while a child growing up and then one that was suppose to be my daughter's dog but ended up being mine. growing up i was an avid hunter. anyway i wanted a beagle in the worse way. my mom got me a poodle. well guess what i found out. poodles are like the best german hunting dogs. yes that is correct. take away those fancy show cuts and they are exceptional retreiving dogs, particularly in the water, that curly hair makes them extremely bouyant. so my daugther's dog was even a better hunter. that dog could find a pheasant or a rabbit if there was one in the fields. there have actually been books written about their abilities as hunting dogs. ashame what the french did to them.
