I'm working on a 105 bike that has a standard crank and I'd like an easy swap to a compact. What's out there that I should be searching for?

If you must use the octalink bb and want a 110 black compact crank, search for a Ritchey crankset like this one:

But caveat emptor, some of them developed stress fractures and broke.

Good Luck!

If you go Ritchey do your research, some were recalled for that reason. The ones that weren't recalled should be fine. I had some on a franken bike caad 3 I built a few years ago--no issues.

I've got a set of those Ritchey cranks on a bike I'm getting ready to part out. Mine are all black, Pro model I think. Send me a PM if you are interested in them.

Check the recall website and see if yours were part of the recall. Otherwise you just need to keep and eye on them. A lot of octalink cranks creaked when the crank arms weren't torqued down, and/or seated, properly.

I've had a set of those Ritchey WCS cranks for 13 years. The NDS crank arm was recalled and replaced by Ritchey. They've been 100% trouble free the entire time. No creaks, no problems.

I was unaware of the issues with them and never really looked them over. I now no that the issue could have been prevented with just a bit of research and inspection.

It might be cheaper/easier to find some current black 105 cranks for the bike. You can probably sell the octalink bb since they seem desirable to keep the 7700/6500 stuff running (109.5)....

FSA made three that worked with Octalink: Gossamer, Carbon, and Energy. All came with compacts. All are discontinued and only found with some ebay scouring. Ritchey also made a short-lived carbon Octalink compact crank. I've got two and they are really nice.

I used to have one of those Ritchey WCS Octalink cranksets and the arms would loosen periodically on the spindle. Pretty annoying. Looks like others have had better luck with it so YMMV.

It was nice otherwise - lightweight and nice low q-factor.

Me too. I did the very easy swap/recall. My original arm looked perfect but Ritchey made the exchange so fast and easy that I have no regrets about getting the improved arm.

Pretty sure I have a post-recall set of 175's in my stash.
