Lately my calves and hams are REALLY thrashed after a hard ride / race.
Very sore and feeling like they're going to knot up.
Can anyone think of a possible cause?
I haven't changed any bikes or gear lately...

Double check that your saddle hasn't slid backwards by mistake.

how's your flexibility there--hard effort will overtax what isn't bothered at lower effort
hydration--I have calf issues and much worse when not well hydrated
electrolytes--for me potassium and magnesium help, as I tend to get enough sodium and calcium in diet/drinks
foam rolling/lacrosse ball rolling helps me too
best of luck

Assuming your bike position hasn't changed this is a hydration issue.

Drink lots and lots of water and electrolytes days before the big rid. You have to flush your body of the anti diuretic hormones if you're not gettin enough h20.

That and stretch
