The big brands leaving really hurt. I went to interbike from 94 to 06. It was nice when everyone was there. The splintering that has happen with big brands leaving and then the handmade shows pulling away small vendors has really ruined it. I think that not having one central event is a real loss.

The article overlooks the fact that the bike business is transitioning to a direct-to-consumer model that bypasses retailers. Even shops that do purchase inventory can do so via the internet and no longer need to attend a trade show to place their orders. The shop I patronize stocks few bikes, because it can’t afford to stock a sizable inventory and can order anything you want out of a catalogue and have it within a couple days.

The demise of the trade show is/has been occurring in other industries for many of the same reasons mentioned above.
