i asked around and found a friend with one of those VHS/DVD combo machines which will make copies. From there, you can rip it to wherever you want.

I have done it feeding VHS into my DVR/DVD. I'm sure software exists to get it onto your Mac. I don't know if copyright protected VHS can be easily preserved. My DVR will not record copyright protected VHS.

Costco occasionally has sales to transfer your VHS tapes to DVD for about $15/tape. I've done this with about 20 tapes or so. What you end up with in terms of quality depends on how much your tapes have degraded . Mine are okay but some of the tapes were 20 years old but at least they are in a more stable format .

I had a ton of training and family videos on vhs that I wanted to convert. I ended up borrowing a VHS/DVD converter and transferring it all over to DVD. I used Handbrake for the ones I wanted to rip from DVD to MP4 files for uploading/sharing from the Mac.
