This trend is reminding me of a common ploy among fading entertainers: as soon as the career path is spiralling downward and the entertainer's status is hovering close to "irrelevant," the entertainer blurts out a "shocking" confession that momentarily reignites the public's pathetic curiosity and artificially extends the entertainer's mediocre career. Can a book, or even just a cameo in a viagra commercial, be far behind?

The confession can take many forms: e.g., I was abused, I abused, I was a drug/alcohol/sex addict, I had a "thing" about vegematics,...and on and on. This sort of staged confessional discourse has long been de rigueur for marginalized stars of the big (and small) screen. Are we on the cusp of a similar wave among ex-pro cyclists?

Me and my buddies Tim and Owlsey took LSD.

Before it was banned.

Before it was banned? If it isn't banned than isn't it O.K.? Was ever not banned? If something is not illegal, isn't it therefor legal?

What do I know, I'm morally or inellectually confused.

Was LSD ever not banned? Or EPO? LSD was totally legal until the 'authorities' saw how much fun and enlightenment people were getting with it and, after doing some experiments of their own, decided it must also be dangerous. I think it was banned sometime in the late '60s or so. I was too young to ever try it before it was banned. I don't know the history with EPO, but it was legal when it was relatively new, wasn't it?

Dirt gave me Mushrooms, but advised me not to take them. This was before they were banned so I was confused. He then laughed and ate them....then he laughed at me all night long. :butt:

You raise an interesting point, Ray, regarding the history of LSD's legality. The "early adopters" approached it with extreme seriousness, treating it as a powerful mind-expanding substance that was as much "experimented with" as "dropped."

It offered a truly fantastic experience that left one profoundly changed. It altered the categories by which we grasped reality. (Think of White Rabbit, the finest rock song--ever. Or Huxley's Doors of Perception--one of the less trippy books around.) And it made anyone who tried to write about the experience on an internet forum into a cliche-spewing scrivener.

Then there was a shift in usage and users. As you noted, people soon began to use LSD recreationally as just another intoxicating agent, alongside alchohol, pot, speed, etc. It lost its serious side and became simply another escape mechanism. And it was criminalized.

I may be wrong - again, I was really young - but I think it was criminalized BEFORE it got widespread enough to just be another buzz (although I really wonder how anyone could take LSD and come through the experience without more than just a 'buzz' happening in their mind). It was the various govt experiments and Timothy Leary stuff, when it was taken DAMN seriously, that convinced the government to criminalize it. The theory, at least among those who were pissed it was made illegal, was that the government was afraid of what would be unleashed if too many people did it and were 'enlightened' by it. I know there are other takes on this. But I don't believe it was until after it was criminalized that it came into really widespread use and became more recreational than explorational.

I personally didn't try psychadelics until the mid-70s, when a lot of the furor was over. While my initial intent may have been recreational, it took me about 1/2 hour into my fist experience to see that it was much more than fun. But I had friends who never got past the "man, I saw such cool COLORS, man!" stage with it. Obligatory bike content - they never saw a Joe Bell paint job, had they?

Very powerful and interesting stuff. I knew a few people back in the day who I'd have to rate as true acid casualties - they were never the same after doing waaaay too much of the stuff. I stuck mostly to mushrooms and peyote for the limited number of times I tried it, and I've never had a single regret.
