I've always ridden SPD but now I have myself a pair of Specialized Audax shoes and no pedals for them.
Time? Speedplay? Weight is a *bit* of a concern but not one I want to spend over $100..otherwise I'd get the PD-6800..

I am going to try the Time Xpresso 2...

You'll get mixed reviews on the Xpressos but I've been very happy with mine. I also just use the Xpresso 2. Cheap and light. And the float suits me better than Shimano's.

I'm a big fan of my Xpressos. Currently using the XPresso 6's and 8's.

I can't recommend Look-compatible Exustar pedals enough. They are like 1/3 the price of the name brands, while retaining full functionality. I use them on all my race bikes and training bikes and they have lasted two seasons so far with no bearing issues at all.

I need new cleats, so I am just ordering a new pair of pedals (for like $8 more).

Why not try cleat adaptors first to use with your SPD?

Really hard to beat Shimano SPD-SL. The 105's can be found in your budget. The model that is one level below (model number escapes me) are every bit as good and only slightly heavier. The 105's though are the real bargain, they are nearly as nice as Dura Ace while only being a tad heavier.

Pedals are near indestructible, easily maintained and rebuildable, and in a crunch, the cleats can be found in almost any bike shop. Plus, I believe the design of the cleats make them easier to walk in.

Other brands are certainly good candidates, but with the ease of finding cleats plus the robust design, hard to argue against.

Then what are we supposed to recommend? The color?

I use CX shoes and Shimano PD-A600 on the road. I like to be able to hoof it a bit if I need to.

Ritchey makes a pretty nice light pedal. I also have a set of (well) used Speedplays I would let go for real cheap. $20.00 plus freight.
