View Full Version : [because I'm crazy] recommend me a frame

Budget? I don't know, I suppose if I went custom it'd be in the realm of $1500 if that is possible, prob not. I have nothing against going with a production frame but... I am oddly sized (handlebar x/y is 441 / 658) - I don't think there are hardly any frames that fit this that are not custom, unless I run a short top tube (less than 53?) if I want a 100mm stem.

I am enjoying how well my Diverge rides, but the future shock feels like cheating, there's a lot of things 'going on' there and the frame is aluminum and I want steel? Am I silly?

I like disc brakes and thru axles. I want clearance for at least 700x38.

I have a dealer near that does Gunnar/Wateford (And Seven, but I can't afford that).

Thoughts, suggestions, concerns. Thanks :hello:

Budget of $1,500 is for the frame only, or frameset?

I was able to get a tonic fab vanishing point for $1,675, frame and fork, with custom geometry.

I based the $1500 on what a Gunnar would run me, or what some other builders i've found sort of charge - frameset would be great but I realize that may not be possible, so ultimately $2000 would be the most top-end

If there is something production that fits, I'm all ears

Allan Varcoe on the forum builds a pretty sweet bike! I'm hoping to get one eventually after grad school is over.

This bike is pretty close
https://rideendpoint.com/collections/frontpage/products/fbm-x-endpoint-hunter-gatherer

The medium with 5deg X 90mm stem and 20mm spacers is within a few mm of your spec. It's on sale right now to boot!

Great bikes!

Hi, thanks, but that's exactly a sale, that's the pre-order price and the rest is due when the frame is ready :)

For about $2,300 for the frame and fork: http://stelbel.it/en/prodotto/sb03/
tig weld steel
(I think their other models are cheaper)

Hard to beat Gunnar and custom available. I sold a bunch of them(and Waterfords), Richard knows his stuff.

You're not crazy, in here at least (sez the person who when asked how many bikes/projects he had, had to go to the bike cave and count). Plus one on the Stelbel, seriously considering one myself.

Dang as much as I like disc brakes, the retrogrouch in me wouldn't be opposed to some canti brakes, either.

Started peeking at Kelly Knobby X - anyone know the lead time? I hear those are great frames..

I honestly cannot decide between discs and canti brakes!
I know canti will net a lighter weight bike but discs stop so well, thru axles make it easy to get wheels back in..

I went disc for my latest cross bikes because you can easily go between 700c and 650b wheels if you get the same hub and same rotor set. Like you said, heavier, but the braking is so much nicer, especially with the hydro set up.

Yes, I was thinking this but then again I also don't want to have multiples of things..

How'd you find the pricing? That Rodano looks great!

I emailed them about 6 months ago, so prices might be higher now (and price was for frame & fork, and it's the SB/03, not the Rodano ).
I follow them on FB, they have some nice bikes. If I get another frame, it will probably be from them.

Here's the Nina pricing received from Stiebel last overnight...

Very tempting. I need to figure out the whole shebang with Record HO disc and see if that's in the cards.

I think I could go N=2 with the Pegoretti and this one.

I got my Gunnar Crosshair in. Ended up going with rim brakes.

I am looking for a custom randonneur frame potentially. Any suggestions for a builder for those at under $1500? Ideally I'd spend less than $1300 but that's tough for a frame that's got a bit more braze-ons

Igor,

If it fits, I'd look at a Rivendell Sam Hillborne at $1,300. It has copious space for big tires and fenders, and oodles of braze-ons to hang racks. It doesn't have lighting accruements, however. It is a smart machine.

Heya - I've had the Hillborne twice before, and the sizing wasn't quite right and I want 650B (I have a really nice wheelset for it as well) - the 55cm is a bit long and is 700c, and I'm a bit picky about the 51cm's sloping top tube..

The new batch is black and creme and my fav color scheme and is canti

I got a Sam this fall as a placeholder before an Atlantis arrived. I was pleasantly impressed by the Sam in all aspects. I understand that fit requirements are paramount.

It's bit over budget but how bout ebisu (https://www.jitensha.com/eng/aboutframes_e.html)?

And of course.. gunnar and waterford again, but guessing you want a different flavor :)

And mentioning Jeff Lyon again

I would grab a 44 Huntsman. It’s a couple $100 more but it’s worth it.

Wants: Rim brake.
Ebisu a bit over budget but their filet frame is not that significantly so.
Jeff Lyon is not taking any orders for at least a year.
