I have a smarter trainer for actual indoor training, but it's too nice and heavy to bring to races and leave in my SUV.

I was looking at this Tacx Blue Twist, which is $169 MSRP.

Problem is that you have to set the lever before getting on the bike. So I'm wondering if you still get a range of resistance from just varying the speed of your wheel. If so, about how much range do you get?

My FTP is 270watts, and I expect to be warming up in the 170 to 230 watt range.

Will this trainer work for me?

I had the version with the remote lever but never actually used it. I just set the resistance to 7 out of 10 and could happily move between 100-400+W at 100rpm just by changing gear.

That was very helpful. Thank you!
