I have one and we appear to ride similar sized bikes. If I didn't like it so much, I'd offer it up for partial trade on your vamoots.

Yes that was a standard rear stay mono lug used by many frame builders
My Strawberry frame has the same lug and without having indexed shifters mounted the frame flex that this mono frame design induces causes the rear derailleur to down shift under load Not great for going up hill

Some models are better to look at than ride..

+100 on this.

I've never liked them. "Normal" seatstays are so elegant, why replace them with something chunky that makes the back end look like the front of the bike?

I have one of those lugs, it weighs about the same as a carbon fork. Ok, that's a slight exaggeration, but it's a boat anchor. Seat stays are one of the few places where a builder has the ability to distinguish their work, I just don't see using any kind of lug there, either the ones that have the straight-in fastback sockets or this monostay lug

Agreed. I can handle them on a MTB, but road? Just looks wrong to me.

Monos have always embraced the dialectic of being over and under engineered.

I find them elegant, but maybe that's just me.

I love a good monostay. My buddy welded this, and had it copper plated:

Was a real challenge to line up, but the result is beautiful.

I do few now that most of my bikes are for larger rubber, but I dig em.

This bike (http://www.winterbicycles.com/projects/luchtreiziger/) is lugged, but the wishbone is fillet brazed.

Make a wish! Most of my builds use the wishbone rear, but I bend and braze my own, gossamer elegance. Tell Rob English that they're heavy.

That said, my road bike has standard seatstays brazed to the back of the seat tube.

I say the Serotta Ottrott, Parlee Z3c and IF SSR SEC I owned...none of which are fillet .

gotta say i have never liked the looks of mono stays either. i guess it is like saying potatoes and pototoes. i personalized thing. certainly are a lot of mono stay bikes out thiere. at one point i think their popularity soared with the advent of carbon fiber bikes.

traditional v monostay?
besides aesthetics. what characteristics of a frame changes?

my guess would be that ride characteristics are unchanged however, depending on frame material, structural strength might be affected i.e. metal frames seat stays stronger, carbon fiber frames mono stay stronger but purely my opinion. no scientific facts to back it up. it would be interesting to here from some frame builders.

From other applications, as far afield as tennis racquets, that the dual tube versus mono stay should combat torsional twisting on off-center loads. Not sure at all if that's a thing on this part of a bicycle frame application and waiting for someone that knows what they're talking about to chime in.

Viner used to do some cool machining on their monostay Airplane v6 frames. Can't find an image, but apparently it provided a tiny bit of flex and comfort in the rear triangle (although I suspect that was marketing more than anything else). Looked neat though.

Neither fillet nor steel, but I love my Firefly's monostay. I really need to take new pics of this bike, a lot has changed.

Ignoring carbon rigs...I have a single steel monostay...not the best pic, but you'll get the basic idea:

I love this thread!

I have a soft spot for Mom-stays....since the Elephant NFE has already been posted here is the behind of my Hunter. In case you are wondering, that tire is a 700c Rock'n'Road....yes...it has loads of room for big fat tires.

There was a thread not long ago re bikes with monostays:

http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=177762

For regular road bikes I prefer more traditional dual stays, but there are some nice examples of monostays in that thread.
