Hey all,

I might be a dufus here but was wondering if it would be a bad idea to put a niner 29er carbon fork on a 650b/27.5 frame. would it feel and look really goofy? Thanks in advanced.:o sorry if this subject was already touched.

You should check the axle-to-crown length on the fork that is intended to come with the bike, and the fork you're thinking about. That will make the biggest difference in how the bike feels.

Thank you. Itll be a ritchey p-650b frame. I just had an additional fork not in use but looks to be better to buy a 27.5 fork.

It will more than likely substantially slack your HTA, which will definitely alter the bike's ride. Only you get to decide how you like it.

The Ritchey 650b fork has an axel to crown of 459mm and a 42mm rake.

The Niner fork has an axel to crown of 470 with a 45mm rake.

I think it would roughly slacken the HTA from 70 degrees to ~ 69.5 degrees and the STA from 73.5 degrees to ~70 degrees.

The other variable will be that it will also raise the BB, but I don't think it would be that much of a change. The only way is to try it and see if you like it.

I have a Soma B Side V1 which is a 650b that has a 71.5 degree HTA, 73 STA, and 50mm BB drop with the original rigid fork (453mm axel to crown and 43mm rake). I wanted to fit a 2.5in 27.5 WTB Breakout on the front and needed more fork clearance so I changed the fork to a Salsa Cromoto Grande 29er fork with an axel to crown of 468mm and a 45mm rake.

I really like how my bike handles now. It is hard to say if it is due solely to the fork change or combined with changing the front tire from a 2.3 Vigilante to the 2.5 Breakout. I am not a geometry expert by any imagination, I just figured I would try it and now I love it. YMMV and all but, I would try it first since you already have the Niner Fork.

People have put the Niner fork on 26" frames, so it shouldn't be an issue at all, or look goofy. As Ken C laid out above, difference is minimal, if at all. I'm sure it would be a fun bike.

Thank you. I will give it a shot. I will also look for a 27.5 suspension fork in the time being.

Are you planning to use a 650b wheel in the 29er fork? I'd say it's worth giving it a shot if you already have the fork.
