View Full Version : 35c gravel "Slicks"?

I have a Swiss Cross coming and it looks that it will take up to 35c tires. This bike will see a lot of commute time, pavement and smooth dirt so knobbies will just get in the way and wear prematurely. Does anyone make a slick tire that rolls/corners well and has decent flat protection?

Panaracer GK 32 smoothies ? Not 35s', per se, but combined with a wide rim, they get close. Otherwise they have handled reasonably well, roll nice, have good flat protection and are pretty inexpensive. At least a candidate for your list. Mine have pounded a lot of dirt, gravel and pavement this season. They've been good.

You want gravel kings (as per above, they are 32mm but they are excellent)

or, a bit more money but excellent,

compass bon jon pass.

Really...are those still the class leader? I had some big Paselas on my Kelly and they rode/rolled like they were filled with sand.

lower the psi.

try again.

I know nothing of "class leader", just know that they have worked for me in the past, at d2r2 and now on my touring bike. Overall, I considered them good value.

paselas are great tires.

do they ride as nicely as the compass tires? no, but they are a much more durable tire and still ride pretty nicely with the right pressure in my experience. like weisan above, d2r2, miles and miles of dirt roads and all the blacktop required to access those dirt roads. i think they're well suited to a wide tire commuter personally.

I've only had them for a about 3 weeks so longevity and durability is still TBD, and they're 33s, but I'm loving my new Challenge Strada Biancas. Super comfortable, fast, and more than capable on moderate gravel.

Panaracer T-Serv.
Very good deal and excellent tires for what you describe. I swear by them for all around use. I run them at 60psi. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Panaracer-T-Serv-PT-Tires-Pair-RED-700x35C-/162596150577?hash=item25db7c5d31:g:0ZoAAOSwlyJZbkN q

I've got some 30mm Challenge Strada Biancas I just put on a bike... I know they make a 36mm version. Would be my suggestion provided you don't need tubeless.

I forgot about them, I had a set of 700x35 on a bike I sold and regretted not keeping the tires. I was unable to find replacements in that size in tan at the time. I see they are still available from this source. https://www.sgvbicycles.com/collections/road-bike-tires/products/resist-nomad-tire-tan-html?variant=32748527183

I've been having good luck with the Specialized Roubaix Pro 30/32 tires. They're heavy by roll fine once they're going and have yet to have a flat. Ridden in both Northern VA chunky gravel and Minnesota Crushed Limestone.

I really like my 32mm Sector tubeless at 50/55 psi f/r. I would have gone with Bon Jons but dont have enough clearance.

Another option would be Soma Supple Vitesse, almost went for those in 33mm, ut wanted to try tubeless for a while.

I've been riding these Bon Jons for a good bit now in a huge range of conditions, including some damned ragged conditions, as in sharp-edged limestone rocks/gravel and the tires have been all but flawless. The only bump was during a fast, hard ride on one of my favorite and roughest tracks the sidewall of the front tire got cut. Patched the cut on the inside, put in a tube (tubeless before but the cut too much for self-sealing) and the tire's still running strong. Have to say that with a tube I find the tire less supple than tubeless. Given how well the patch has stood the time, I'm going to try tubeless again. The rear tire has been tubeless the whole time. For me the performance of these tires is much, much better than any other tire I've ever run. Expensive but sweet riding and super fast.

I think your experience echos others' experience with Compass tires. Exceptional ride characteristics. Maybe there is a hiccup once in a while if you really thrash them but probably not as often as you would expect from a tire like this. There are probably better choices for extreme circumstances, but they perform exceptionally well nearly everywhere else.
It is also a huge improvement that the Compass tire line is transitioning over to tubeless - I would like to see the Compass 700x32 go that direction soon.

I've been pleased with the Soma Shikoros. 33s or 38s. They roll nicely on pavement and gravel.

I totally agree. I would love some EL tubeless in 32mm.
