What's the forum wisdom on devices for hoisting up tandems?.. Would something like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003VOX1XU/ref=asc_df_B003VOX1XU5110534/?tag=hyprod-20&creative=394997&creativeASIN=B003VOX1XU&linkCode=df0&hvadid=167146980943&hvpos=1o10&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11853213978373243014&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9016851&hvtargid=pla-273151884609#featureBulletsAndDetailBullets_second ary_view_div_1502033969606 work?

I've used these in shops quite a bit over the years. They work well.. https://deltacycle.com/bike-storage/bicycle-ceiling-hoist

I've used one to hoist my 18 foot sea kayak for about 20 years, and our Chariot while the kids were smaller. They work exactly has advertised, but I never really trusted the hooks to hold something long-term. So I rigged some belt and suspenders back ups.

For the Chariot, I used a cable loop through the hook bracket and a heavy duty carabiner, so the hooks were locked into the trailer and couldn't come loose no matter how hard I shook it. For the boat, I have hooks anchored into beams to attach cushioned cradles under the bow and stern, plus carabiners and loops on the hoist hooks. After I hoist it up to the ceiling, I attach the other supports and give the hoist just a hair of slack. For the boat to fall, both systems would have to fail.

They work well pulling up and lowering heavy things, but the hook method to secure the load just isn't secure enough for me.

I have one similar, and I don't like the hooks either. It was swag from a job I did, so I just accepted it, but if I were actually shopping for one, I'd hit the hardware store for a length of cord and a few pulleys, and rig my own, with chin-up-spec hooks.

The one thing that's been a struggle for me is that at the front, the sensible place for the hooks is on the handlebar, flanking the stem. Only if you hook on there, there's nothing to stop the bars and front wheel turning to the side. Wheel's got to be straight to fit in the space I'm trying to hoist the thing into, which may not be the case for everyone... but if I had ALLLL this space, I wouldn't be going to such effort to store the tandem!

I'm sure there's a way around that problem, I just haven't thought very deeply into it. Maybe if you built it longer than the bike you're hanging, and hooked to the front wheel instead of the bar, the pull in the forward direction would keep the wheel straight?

I bough this two pack and only used one.

The hooks do not hook very well, so I lash the bike to the hooks so it doesn't slip off. other than that, it works fine.

We have 8 or 9 hanging in the shop. We sell cargo bikes and they work just fine.

Thank you all for the feedback! Ordered a RAD system. Seems rather inexpensive, provided it works. If it fails... well, that could be an expensive experiment! Let's see how it goes...
